System Tray Notifications Keep Changing
If you go to Task Bar properties >Notification Area > Customize, Win7 seems to make all new icons "Only Show notifications" by default (annoying). The problem is, when you change an icon (program) to "Show icon and notifications", click OK, then reboot, that icon is changed back to "Only Show notifications". I always create a shortcut to Task Manager in the "All Users" startup folder so it loadsat Login, and is minimized to the system tray. Win7 keeps changing the icon to "Only Show notifications" even though I have explicitly changed it to "Show icon and notifications". Bug or "Feature"?

I saw this for some icons in the beta build 7000 but it seems to havebeen fixedin the RC build 7100.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I am using the Win7 RC, build 7100 (yes, the offical one from MS). I have seen this issue through numerous Win7 buiilds, and was hoping it would finally be fixed in the RC.

was hoping it would finally be fixed in the RC. Microsoft has a twisted definition of "Release Candidate". Usually product cycle is alpha -> several betas (which make most feature changes) -> then there's a RC (or two) with a feature lock (only bugs and a couple of issues get solved, but mostly no new features). But Microsoft, they do one beta, one [almost barely] RC (while feature suggestions just keep coming), and then the RTM (final version). Then, when asked, they'll complain about lack of time or smth. If you ask me, the current RC should be called Beta2 at least until they get all the features implemented. Regards, Kristaps.

I discovered this problem in the exact same scenario as you have with the original Beta 7000 and was expecting it to be fixed in the RC 7100, but it has not. I customize the notification area icon for Task Manager by setting the behavior to "Show icon and notifications" so that I can see the CPU graph in the system tray so that I can monitor it. After a period of time, usually within 24 hours, the behavior setting will revert back to "Only show notifications".At first I thought the setting was never permanently changed and lost after logoff or shutdown. However I have observed the setting remaining the next time I start my computer, so it seems to me that something else in the system is modifying the setting. I always did this with Task Manager in XP and the setting was retained, but I seem to remember that the notfication area icon behaviors were always somewhat problematic.

Yes. I havebeen installing other apps on my Win7 RCtest PC, and the Notification Area icons seem to have a mind of their own. Sometimes they show, sometimes not. Thenotification settings are not being properly saved. And I don't know why there is such a problem with Task Manager. Sometimes when I reboot it shows up, sometimes not. Ususally when I log off and then log back in, it doesn't. Hopefully this will be fixed by RTM(August probably).

I sent a detailed description of this problem a number of times using the feedback link in the original beta, guess this was missed by MS.

I did too. They must know about it, if no other way then by all the MS people using it. Maybe it's not a high priority.

HiAs others here have stated, this was a bug that was reported in the Beta version 7000 of Windows 7.Not all of the bugs that were reported for the beta were fixed in time for the Release Candidate availability date. The work on these bugs is still ongoing and, hopefully most will be fixed in the next released version.Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

My work around for this is to check the "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" box. Because of this problem you can sometimes miss important notifications because the icon is being hidden. I'm assuming that this setting will be permanently saved, does anyone know otherwise? Also, a question for Ronnie. Do you represent Microsoft and know that this is definitely on their "to do" list of fixes before RTM?

Hi RichmnyNo, Iam not employed byMicrosoft, I'm a volunteer, moderatoron these forums. My knowledge/opinions come from doing a lot of research and participating in many Microsoft beta programs during the last 14 years.I do know for a fact that this bugwas reported and that the work on the bugs that were reported in the Beta Build 7000 are still ongoing. That's why I said that 'hopefully' it will be fixed by RTM. :)Bugs are given a priority level when they are reported and crash/corruption in applications/hardware always takes precedence. Hope this helps.Thank You for testing Windows 7 Ronnie Vernon MVP

That's good to here. I'm still using build 7100 and don't plan on trying any other builds until this version goes retail. After repeatedly customizing task manager to "Show icon and notificatons", I've noticed that it seems to retain the setting for a longer period of time, so it's not as annoying when I have to set it again.

FYI - this is fixed in the RTM / Retail release - actually it was fixed many builds before that, which I did post here, but it looks like the forum Nazis removed those posts because they were about "unofficial" builds. Geez.

Nazis? MS HQ is in Washington! :DRegards, Kristaps. P.S.: Epic shoop is epic.

This is happening to me on a new computer with Win 7 installed, so "this is fixed" is not always so.

It's now 4/28/11 and this problem is STLL NOT fixed? You have to be kidding me. I just bought a laptop windows version 6.1.7601 service Pack 1 and I'm having this problem. Did the Microsoft team give up on fixing this?
