The install of Windows 7 created the 100MB "System Reserved" BOOT area on the hard drive, a ROOTKIT virus found this "boot" sector and planted itsself there. None of the anti-virus programs can addrtess this space so the ROOTKIT never has to protect itsself from removal. Every time you boot your machine the virus starts up. Since there are documents and email on this machine I do not want to "format" the entire drive. Is ther any way to assign this area a drive letter and allow access to it by anti-virus programs?

I would be concerned about the source and integrity of the installation dvd that you have for Windows 7. Visit this website: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/howtotell/default.aspx The only way to be sure it's clean is a drive wipe and re-installation of the OS with a known legitimate installation dvd. You could create a bootable anti-malware disk on another computer using this free tool: http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system No guarantee that it will work, but it may be worth a try. Scans and cleans prior to the OS loading.
