System Image Restore Failed 0x80042302
I successfully created an system image of my Windows 7 Ultimate machine (via Windows backup and restore in the control panel). When I try to do a system image restore (from a system repair disc), I immediately get this error message. "The system image restore failed. Error Details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042302)" This is strange because: (1) the creation of the system image completes without any errors (and I cannot seem to find any errors in the event log) (2) I am running the "system image restore" from a "system repair disc", so there is really not event log to check during the restore (unless there is a way to see these errors?) Please advise how to resolve?

Wow, that's everyone's worst nightmare. As one who recently restored a system image backup onto a new computer myself, I can only say it's possible to have it work. Are you restoring onto a partition the same size as the one you backed up? In my case I did. I'm sorry I don't have any other specific advice to give, but perhaps my bumping the thread back to the top will get it noticed for you. -Noel

Noel, thanks for your reply - yes, it is everyone's worst nightmare ... we first set this up, we tested that image backups were working and could be restored, and there has been no errors reported (until we need the system image and it has this strange complaint). Fortunately, we can tentatively access the old disk and build a system image again and it works without errors - it is only when you try to restore that the strange error appears. In answer to your question, yes we are restoring to the same partition size as the one we backed up. In fact it is the exact same HDD size and model, so I feel this is not the cause of the error message. Can anyone assist?

Miya, thanks but this has not solved the problem. Any other ideas?

Can someone please help me understand how to even find out more information about "Error Details: A Volume Shadow Copy Service component encountered an unexpected error. Check the Application event log for more information. (0x80042302)"?
