System File Checker fails to run even after chkdsk /f
I am currently running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit and when I attempt to run the sfc /scannow and I receive a message stating "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation", which looks like it happens before any scanning is completed. Also, when I open the Windows Features screen (to install IIS) it is blank. A few details now: - I had a malware problem and cleaned everything up but there is a residual problem (stated above). - I also had a bad memory stick that was causing a few errors but should not have affected this. Steps taken to troubleshoot: - Always using an Elevated Command Prompt - Ran chkdsk /f from inside the OS as well as from the Install Media and showing no errors - Attempted to run sfc /scannow from inside OS as well as from Install Media and getting the same result Any help is appreciated. Thank you, David

Hi, I'd take out or replace the bad DIMM and then re-run with chkdsk /R then see if you can get the sfc to go. Otherwise, are you receiving any other errors/warnings in the logs? As a matter of personal preference, i tend to re-image any systems that have been affected by viruses and other Malware, is that a possibility in this case? -- Mike Burr

David, go to clean system with USB drive, download http://www.superantispyware.com/portablescanner.html update it on the USB drive, take it to the infected box, run it, clean the box next on the infected box go here for the "snakeoil"..some here are against using cleaners but MS's works great. http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/whatsnew.htm

Hi, In order to repair the system, I suggest you do In-place Upgrade. It should not remove any of your personal profile and installed programs. I will try an In-Place upgrade again. It gave me an error the last time I tried, but I do not remember what it was. As for the memory, all 4 dimms have been replaced and tested and all infections were removed (it was nothing major). The chkdsk was ran after everything was taken care of. I have been receiving errors in the Event Viewer but are not related to this. These can be seen at http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itproinstall/thread/d3a785ba-8d5f-4bcd-a170-17e30412c538. Nothing have been able to fix that error yet. Imaging is not a possibility as we do not image our systems since they are all so vastly different. My company is pretty small and does not know what system consistancy is. I will report back and let you guys know what happens.

I would run MemTest86 and let it finish a single pass. If it succeeds the RAM is probably fine. Then I would obtain the diagnostic CD from your drive's manufacturer. Run a quick test and then a full test. Let it correct any errors. If there are errors I would consider replacing the disk. Then run chkdsk /R and then sfc /scannow If there were no errors on the disk diagnostic, and chkdsk /R and sfc /scannow does not work I would wipe and reload. Time is money and your approaching the land of diminishing returns. :)

I was finally able to get it fixed. I had to do a complete reinstall. Nothing that was suggested worked, and I was running out of time. I used the4 Windows Easy Transfer tool to aid in the process so it was not too bad. Thank you guys for all of the help.
