System 7 - Multiple Simultaneous Network Connections
For my laptop PCs running System 7, I'd like to be able to disable the wireless adapter when the LAN ethernet adapter is connected, like when it is docked. I have Dell laptops & the laptops with XP Professional have this ability through Dell-provided software called Quickset or ControlPoint. Dell does not have this functionality in their laptops with System 7. Can this be accomplished in System 7 networking configuration?

Look in the Device Manager and in the Control Panel at the wireless card properties. One of them should have an option to disable the wireless when there is a LAN connection. If you don't find the option there check in the BIOS setup. I know this is present on a Dell Inspiron 1501 and a Dell Inspiron E1705. I just don't remember where it's at and I don't have access to the laptops to check it, but I have it set to disable the wireless when a LAN connection is present on both. I also think that option is in my Eee PC 1000HE. It a hardware/BIOS propertiy and not a Windows 7 feature that I know of.

Hi, As Rich was mentioned, Windows 7 does not have such feature to disable Wireless adapter automatically when there is a LAN. To accomplish the feature, you may need involve Dell to consult whether they have some application for Windows 7. Also, you can install some third party software, such as Wireless AutoSwitch. Thanks, Novak

Check out Wireless AutoSwitch at http://www.wirelessautoswitch.com it does exactly what you want. What is Wireless AutoSwitch? Wireless AutoSwitch runs as a service and will automatically disable your wireless card when you connect to a LAN (hard wire) connection, and re-enable the wireless card when there is no LAN connection. This ensures that you are always using the fastest connection for network traffic. In the office this helps reduce redundant network connections, while still helping your employees seamlessly transfer from wired to wireless network connections. For offices that are wireless security conscious this application makes sure the laptop's wireless card is off when the user is wired into your network, preventing bridged connections and preventing someone from the outside hacking your network through a laptop's wireless card.

There is also a product called 1NET. 1NET is Domain aware so works well in environments with corporate wireless network and devices with mobile broadband. http://www.accessity.com.au/1Net.htm
