Sync Open files with Offiline Files
Currently using Win 7 Offline Folder feature to keep my "Work" folder synced between my file server, my desktop and my laptop (at least). One of the hundreds of files being synced is a 5GB PST Archive file. As it stands, every time I have Outlook open, the sync fails because the file is locked. Doesn't the new Sync use Volume Shadow Copy? Why not?!?!?! Unrelated, is Delta Compression used for syncing? I would hate to transfer 5GB+ just because I archived a quarter worth of e-mails! If either of these features is not present, I humbly suggest they be added via windows update. Thank you in advance for any info. Nuno

Sorry I can't answer the first part of your question, however I do know that Offline utilizes something called Bitmap Differential Transfer. In essence this looks at what is the different between the local cache and network locations and trasnfers only the difference betwen the two. I did hear that it was suppose to work with PST and database files (which assume they are active) so this is new to me.Don

Thank you Don I appreciate the info. This is very good considering that once I get Win7 on my laptop I will be syncing over the WAN when on the road. As for the file lock on PST, to be honest I've only had one a couple of days with Win7 because of travel, so it could be something on my end. Once I get back I'll do some more detailed tests and if possible post a screen cap of the error.

OK definitely a Offline Files limitation, which is a shame. I don't see a technical reason that would prevent us to replicate an open file based on it's shadow copy. Hope MS is listening, and that they consider changing this in a future update. Regards, Nuno
