My Surface Pro 3 has more incidents of unwanted restart during sleep in recent months. I reset the computer to factory settings in February and reinstalled software one by one to see what caused the problem. SuperAntispyware Pro seems to be a problem but even without it, I still experienced the issue but at a lower frequency. But now I installed Arduino IDE and saw an increase in frequency. The computer would restart either with charger or without but always during sleep. Since I need Arduino IDE, I thought I should dig into it to figure out why.
Long story short, I did not find the cause but did see "WIN8_DRIVER_FAULT" and "pci" in the memory dump file using windbg. The dump file was produced each time the computer abnormally restarted (I attached the current memory dump only since I don't have previous ones). However I don't have any yellow flag under "device manager". I attached the memory dump file link (http://expirebox.com/download/7e757a938924b393de6820412b2717c0.html) and appreciate your help to resolve this annoying issue.
Thanks.
I shall suggest you to kindly repost your problem in the following thread:
Hi publicprofile2012,
In traditional environments, this issue might be normally caused by WIFI or LAN adapter drivers or some VPN software. However, I dug online seems like similar case occurs on Surface recently, since you mentioned that this issue occurred in recent months and it might be related to firmware released last month.
Anyway please make sure the newest firmware has been installed and keep system up to date.
If this issue still persists, as what S.Sengupta suggested, you could post your issue to surface forum because you might get more and newest information there.
Regards
D. Wu
Thanks, S. Sengupta and D. Wu. I have deleted a couple of VPN software and will see if it helps. I was actually looking at Windows Update History to see a list of firmware updates but did not see any. I thought there was one on 1/15/15 but the history only showed as early as 1/28/15. I will appreciate if you can point me to how to make sure my SP3's firmware is up to date. The windows update is automatic.
If the problem persists, I will follow S.Sengupta's instruction to post in the SP3 thread.
By the way, why VPN software can cause this kind of issues?
Best,
Hi publicprofile,
Inappropriate VPN Software also could cause network driver crash when re-connect to network during sleep mode when using VPN connection. The firmware should be updated with Windows update. You could check update history in following link.
https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/install-update-activate/pro-3-update-history
And I apologize for firmware released last month thing I said. Obviously the last update is in 1/15/2015 and your firmware is up to date.
And thanks for asutts reply.
Still since it only happens on surface pro 3 and seems like related to firmware, I think you guys might get more and newest information in Surface pro 3 forum.

Thanks, D. Wu and Asutt. I deleted two VPN software and the computer has yet to have an episode since then (four days ago). Hope this continues to work for me and also works for you, Asutt.
Best,
