Stupid problem - installed app just quit working
I have an application I've been using (mRemote) almost from the day I installed Win 7 x64 ultimate. It has worked fine. Suddenly I'm getting a "mRemote has stopped working - windows is checking for a solution to the problem." whenever I try to start it. No solution is offered. So I uninstalled it and re-installed it. Same problem. So I then uninstalled and then installed it on another drive. Works fine. So I then ran a file system check on my OS drive. No problems found so I uninstalled from the 2nd drive and reinstalled to the OS drive. Same Problem. Messing around, I tried something stupid. I changed the name of the folder it is installed on in the OS drive (Program Files (x86)\mRemote to Program File (x86)\mRemote1). Now it works. WTF? Change the folder name back to mRemote, and it fails to run. Change it to mRemote1 and it works. ??? So why is Windows 7 not running this application, why is the error so lame, why did it start for no reason, and last - how can I fix it? BTW - AppLocker is not configured and the Application Identity service is not running. Tested with UAC disabled and enabled and with AV on and off. No impact.

Hi, Thanks for posting in Microsoft TechNet forums. Can you associate with any software change recently? Please run regedit.exe from start, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE and check if the problematic application is still appearing. If so, delete all the related registry keys to check the result. Or search the for “mRemote1” or “mRemote” in the registry. You can also create a new user account to check the result. If the issue persists, the following third party software could worth a try: http://www.revouninstaller.com/ Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. I was testing some firewall routing and when I tried to mount a nfs share from my PSN my workstation locked up. I had to do a hard reset and mRemote was running. Other than that, there was nothing else that happened. I'll go ahead and do the registry S&D.

I fixed this by manually going through the registry and removing all references. I then went through the file system and removed all folders associated with the application. Since search in Win 7 is broken, I used Super Finder XT to assist in finding those files and folders. So there is as of yet no answer as to why the message I got was so unhelpful ("stopped working") or why it happened.

Hi, I am glad it has been removed successfully. Please understand for third party software, it is impossible for Microsoft to provide spesific and useful error code\message. It is the software manufacture to develop more specific troubleshoot tips within their software. Your understanding is appreciated. I understand that this problem occurred with a 3rd party software. Keep in mind that the error message was from the OS and it was the OS preventing the application from running. The application itself had no issues. Win 7 was preventing it from running and the reason it gave was misleading at best.

Hi, According to your solution, the registry must contains corrupt values. How can it be modified, one thing left could be the conflict with certain third party software running background or add-ons . "XXX stopped working" is general error message that tell you something wrong with this application. Windows 7 has not develop the ability to check third party software's registry and fix the corrupt value.
