Student Upgrade $29.95 from Windows 7 Home Edition to Windows 7 Professional Edition
I have not seen an answer to this question yet. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and I want to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional using the $29.95 student upgrade promotion. Is this possible? And if so, would it be an "upgrade" over the top of my current edition, or would it instead be a clean install? It looks like the promotion is geared towards users with XP or Vista, but I would like to try Windows 7 Professional, now that I have tested the Home edition.

Dave - If memory serves me, to get from Win 7 HP to Pro, you'd need to do what's called an Anytime Upgrade. You'd launch the Anytime Upgrade from the control panel which will then contact Microsoft. You'll submit your information, and it would generate an Win 7 Pro product key for you. You'd then insert your product DVD and use the key you got online to upgrade. Given this, I don't suppose it really matters how you get the product key. It should, at least, in theory, work - of course, provided you're eligible for the upgrade in the first place. You'd be doing an "in place" non-destructive upgrade installation over the top of what you've got installed now.

Hi,as Wolfie2k6 mentioned, directly do the upgrade from Home Premium to Progfessional with the DVD is not supported. We will need to do the WindowsAnytime Upgrade (WAU). On an edition of Windows that can be upgraded using WAU, there is a Get more features with a new edition of Windows 7 link in the System Control Panel. We can choose "Enter an upgrade key" method to upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.
