Strange sound when using IE explorer, Windows explorer and Messenger
Hi there, I have a strange sound, almost like a slight tap on a drum(like a boing), that comes through the speakers whenever I click on a link in IE explorer, in Windows Explorer, or when MSN messenger loads up. It is coming from the speakers as I do not hear it when I have the volume off. It also is there when I attach headphones. I also have Google Chrome, and it does not make this sound when I use that browser. I just installed Windows 7 a few weeks ago and it started happening shortly after that. My driver is up to date. When I open the mixer, it registers a system sound as well. It only seems to be doing this with these windows programs so far.

That sounds like a kernel mode error. If you are having audio with the mixer muted its clear that the audio drivers are in error. I need detailed hardware information to identify the specifics. If you can post the msinfo report it would help us more easily.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! When the mixer is muted, I do not hear it, sorry I forgot to mention it. It is only when the sound is on. However, I have 64 bit Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite 300D laptop. It has a 2.0 GHZ AMD Athlon Dual Core, 4GB Ram, Realtek High Definition Audio Version 6.0.1.5904. What else would you like to know that could help? How do I post the msinfo report?Thank you!

open up the start menu, in the search box type: sfc /scannow This tool may ask your for your Windows disk. Then go to Toshiba's site and see if they have any new drivers for your particular machine. When I run that, nothing happens. A DOS window briefly flashes and then nothing.

OK no problemo, next get your Windows DVD out and do an in-place upgrade. This will fix all of the damage to your registry.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)! When I put in my Windows 7 disc, it just loads up the TUA upgrade manager. This tells me thisUse these easy steps to upgrade to Windows® 7. It is highly recommended that you make a backup*1 of your hard drive content before proceeding. Connect to the Internet. Read the step by step guide at www.toshiba.ca/windows7guide. Update your antivirus software to be compatible with Windows® 7. Please refer to your antivirus provider's website or visit Microsoft's Windows® 7 security software providers for more information about antivirus software. Download and run*2 the Microsoft Windows® 7 Upgrade Advisor. NOTE: The Microsoft Windows® 7 Upgrade Advisor will inform you of any known application compatibility issues. Microsoft may recommend removing some application software before upgrading to Windows® 7. Download and run*2 the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant for Windows® 7. Follow the instructions from the Toshiba Upgrade Assistant for Windows® 7 to complete your installation. NOTE: Your computer will restart several times during the uninstall process for Windows® Vista components. After restarting, you may receive an "Open File - Security Warning" prompt for the file ToshibaUpgradeAssistant.exe. If this happens, click the ‘Run’ button to continue. When I hit step 5, it says that Toshiba Upgrade Assistant for Windows 7 cannot run on Windows 7.

You do know that it's SUPPOSED to make a slight clicking sound when you navigate, right? That's not really like a boing nor drum though. More like a mouse click: Two light, short sounds about 1/20 second apart.Sometimes software changes the soundscape of your system. Before doing all kinds of upgrades and stuff, check the basics:Go to your Control Panel -> Sound dialog, and click the Sounds tab. What sound is associated with the Start Navigation entry in the Windows Explorer section?Assuming it's set to the default Windows Navigation Start.wav sound, while you're there verify that the sound you're hearing is the one associated with Critical Stop by using the test button. That will help verify some of the things suggested above.-Noel

Cheers! That is strange as I never changed that...Though now that I think about I did change my background settings. That sound does match up with what I have, I just couldn't find what would cause it earlier. I just have never heard this sound on any other system, so that is why it took my by surprise. That fixes it, thanks a lot! I feel silly, the simplest solution.

This shows that you had some problems with the audio files, so I still suggest running the DVD and fix the system.Vote if answered or helpful, I am running for Office (joke)!
