Strange problem.. Vista remote desktop not working to a Vista machine (bare machine with updates etc)..
We have this one Vista machine, which is a barely touched Vista x86 machine.. it can connect to the internet fine.. browse other pcs on our domain (its not part of the domain right now).. I've even gone and installed the latest windows updates and rebooted... I also turned off firewall... I can remote into any other vista machines just fine.. but i cannot into this machine.. Any thoughts/suggestions on what to check?

* Is Remote Desktop enabled on that particular machine? I presume this is a Vista Ultimate/Business machine, correct? http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/86c1d9da-ea87-4592-95fc-841adbc8ee721033.mspx * Run a netstat -a command and see if the machine is listening on TCP Port 3389. Note if you changed the listening port to something else make sure the machine is listening on that port. * If you trying to connect from a XP client make sure the client is configured like this... http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDP6-XPClientSettings.jpg ...and the Vista Remote Desktop host is configured like this... http://theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/ScreenShots/XP/RDP6-XPClienttoVistaServerConfig.jpg

I have another workgroup based vista machine to the left of this one.. i cant remote into it either.. but.. i can remote into my domain based vista machine. I can remote into that machine on the left from my domain based vista machine. I even tried changing ports on the wall.. to the machine on the left's cable.. no luck there.. thought maybe that had something to do with it.. I have multiple boot partitions on both machines.. on the one that is failing i tried our other "dirty" business vista image partition, it couldnt be connected to either.

Someone on the pubic microsoft.public.windows.vista.network_sharing news group reported a similar issue and resolved with the fix from this... http://www.vistax64.com/vista-networking-sharing/97931-terminal-services-failure.html Perhaps that will work for you... Good luck...
