Strange network problem, DNS works but the Internet doesn't except www.google.co.uk
Ok this has really got me confused and I really can't work this problem out. Configuration AMD 3500+ 1GB DDR Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLi motherboard (Gigabit Ethernet onboard) Realtek 10/100 PCI network card 80GB WDC HDD 300GB Maxtor HDD (x2) ^ v Ethernet ^ v Linksys WET54GS5 ^ v Ethernet ^ v Speedtouch 585 ^ v eclipse internet ^ v www Pinging is fine! I tested Wet54gs5.lanSpeedtouch.langoogle.co.ukbbc.co.ukwww.eclipse.net.ukyahoo.co.uk So DNS must be working ok and there is connectivity because I can ping. I can browse google, which includes searching but the results cant be used to access websites. I also managed to download google earth but for some reason it was a slow download at only ~60KB/s. (compared to 119KB/s in Win XP) No problems are detected if I do network diagnostics in the networking control centre. I cant activate or run windows update.Remote desktop and file sharing work on my LAN.I have tried using both the PCI Ethernet card installed in my PC and the onboard one. I have the same problem with both.I have also tried 64bit and 32bit ... again the same problem!!!Can any one help?

You have to disable the Firewall/SPI option in your ISP provider router. If you don't have access to your router configuration no workaround has been found. Roberto Gutierrez ASCORP.

Is there not an update to fix this problem?Could I get another public IP and assign it to Vista?

Well I tried disabling the firewall on my router and I was still unable to browse the internet. What an utterly useless beta!

To reiterate, you can connect to your local network without problems, you can get to Google.co.uk but no where else. A couple of things come to mind... 1.) Exactly what error message are you getting when you go to say, www.microsoft.com or anywhere else? 2.) You say you can ping without problems. Have you tried other apps that use the 'net - such as Windows Mail or any other email client? 3.) And speaking of other apps... Have you tried Firefox as yet? Yes, I know, we need to be testing IE7 and all, but trying another browser might yield different results - and we can figure out what the heck is going on here. I don't think the issue is entirely the fault of the beta. I and many others have been able to connect to the www for the most part - tho there are, of course, issues with sites that aren't quite friendly to IE7 just yet.

I have a very similar problem here with build 5384. My pc <-> ethernet <-> bt voyager 210 <-> bt internet. I can get onto most website, though slowly, yet a loads others i can not get on to at all or ping in the command prompt. I can get on google.co.uk, but cant get on bbc.co.uk, team17.com, microsoft.com. Many of the vista support forums work of google aswell, but then many dont or are just very, very slow. Also the online support side of vista doesn't work. updates, media centre extended, even 'feedback'. I've tried disabling ipv6 which hasn't helped. Cheers for any help.......(this is the only thing stopping me moving over to vista properly)

Disabling the hardware firewall on the Speedtouch made no difference. Some screen shots can be found at http://timmay.no-ip.org/vista/Thunderbird e-mail client with a yahoo pop e-mail account doesn't work. This must be the most usless OS ever!!! even my phone can do better (view more websites and e-mail works)

Useless? Not entirely true. But it IS a beta. And betas usually have flaws that make things difficult to deal with at times. I tested some of the links you're having problems with and I'm puzzled. I was able to access at least the front pages of the following: bbc.co.uk - works (actually I've been here before - checking on news and Dr Who info). microsoft.com - no problems there forums.microsoft.com/technet - I'm here, writing this in Vista. 'nuff said. yahoo.co.uk - works fine purevolume.com - works fine, was able to view videos and listen to music ebay.co.uk - no problems. Am able to access the site. eclipse.net.uk - SWEET DEAL! 8 mbps speed for about $30 USD.. NICE! setrains.co.uk - no problems. download.com - ditto. youtube.com - works fine. able to view videos. lovefilm.com - no problems there either adobe.com - now, oddly, I have had issues with this site in the past. Still can't open it I can go on, with the rest of your list of trouble spots - but for some reason, I can access the sites you're having problems with while you're able to go to the sites I'm unable to get to. I don't believe it's Vista that's entirely at fault. I was able to access the above sites in IE7 - don't even have Firefox installed. But given the nature of the two browers are different, you'd think you'd get a different result if it was Vista. I'm assuming you've got another computer (or are able to dual boot to XP) and are able to get to these sites on the same LAN connection...?

I have a dual boot setup, vista is installed on the partition that was used for Ubuntu and XP is as it was before (still bootable). I was using remote desktop to multitask giving me 2 desktops (Vista and XP) on my laptop. Remote desktop even worked at work when I tested the other week. I would test with a 56k modem but after a 2 year struggle to get ADSL when I finally did I blew up the 56k modem with French bangers to get my revenge ... lol. I will have to try and borrow a different modem from work unfortunately it'll be a Speedtouch so likely to have the same problem if it's the modem to blame. Then again how can it be the modem's fault as Linux and windows XP computers work fine.
July 9th, 2006 1:25am

Ok.. So let's see what we've got here. 1.) With XP and Linux - you can access all the above sites. No problems. 2.) With Vista Beta 2 - most are non-responsive. 3.) nothing is changed (hardware wise) between reboots. 4.) You mention you've got a particular type of DSL/Cable modem. Then the next obvious thing to figure out how exactly do you have your internet connection configured... Do you have a specific driver installed for this modem - as you would have for an internal or external 56k modem? The reason I ask - there's usualy an option to configure a modem to do it's thing independently and then simply connect your PC via a LAN option - where you have NO modem driver(s) installed and you're connecting via pure TCP/IP. Normally, you should still be able to access any configuration page(s) via IE or Firefox by typing in the gateway address (usually something like 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) You might need to configure the network port/card's IP address manually if you use static internal IP address' or configure it to DHCP depending on the way the modem is configured. If nothing else - you could try uninstalling the driver for the modem and just tell Vista to access the 'net via a LAN connection. I don't know for sure if this will make any difference in your situation, but, that is how I've got my Vista box configured - have 3 other machines that are on the same network here and Vista seems to get most places without issue.

DHCP works for everything else on the network. Assigning static addresses in Vista made no difference.
July 9th, 2006 4:25pm

Ok... no drivers. Hard to say exactly what's going on here. It doesn't seem to make a whole lot of sense. I'd say it might be a good idea to report this (if you haven't already) to Microsoft directly using the MS Vista Beta client. It can be downloaded from http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=43655 The only discernable difference that I can see between your system and mine is the ISP and the modem. There may be something going on specific to either the ISP or the modem itself.

The problem is probably not related to Vista. I do have the same on some PCs of my LAN with XP Pro since last week... While some PCs do not show any problem,on others I can only access Google and no other site. I did some tests disabling firewalls and so on, no change... Even restoring older system configurations did not help. I suspected the system was not accepeted as genuine but it was bought from MS and went through the MS certification tests some month ago... Quite strange !

Solved!!!There is a problem with the Speedtouch 585 ADSL router I'm using. Disabling the firewall in the web interface does nothing howerver disabling the firewall from the Command Line Interface works a treat! :-)

Im having the exact same problem. Google.com works fine, but most of the Web sites do not work (Firefox, IE and VMWare Player Firefox have the same problem. Web sites from my Intranet work fine. Im sure it is a network issue, but I did not find it yet. Im connected to the Internet through a Check Poing NG3. What did you mean by disabling the firewall on the command line ?

Im having the exact same problem. Did you find any clues to help solve this problem ? My next step will be connecting directly to the Internet or use a Proxy. I think I have done all the other tests.

It depends on the router. The speedtouch has a command line interface that allows router configuration thru a telnet session (like DOS command line). the command for speedtouch is :firwall config state=disabled you have to check if it is possible to disable SPI on your router otherwise you are stuck (like me with my sagem router!).
August 13th, 2006 12:45pm

I have a Check Point firewall, and SPI bug is preventing connection to a big list of Web sites. The Web site that are working are very slow. I have installer a Squid Proxy server because it is not possible to disable Stateful Inspection at the corporate Check Point. The result: the slow Web site are now fast and the Live Update is working ! Bad news: the Web sites that were not working, still do not work with the proxy.

I have the same problem, and I can't access the firewall in command line. Also, there might be another firewall that I'm not aware of. This is defently a bug, and I've seen many posts about it. any other way to resolve it without put your computer directly on the internet with not firewall in between ? Dani

I have the same problem, but only with the internal wireless adapter in my Medion MD97600 notebook. No websites, except Google! Another weird thing is that the Launch Manager application, used to switch the WL adapter on or off, can only switch off the built-in WL hardware. I need to boot from my original Windows XP Home partition (or use the BIOS setting) to switch the WL-adapter hardware on again. The LAN connection (UTP) at the same notebook works fine. An external Gigaset USB Adapter 108 (Siemens) also works fine without any problem. The problem is related only to the built-in Intel (R) PRO /Wireless 2200BG Network Connection. The updated driver from Microsoft Update, or an updated version from the Intel download site does not help. Resolution:The problem is in the Vista file with the name Netw2.inf (\windows \inf) Remove the driver file Netw2.inf (related to the Intel Pro wireless 2200BG). Uninstall the Wireless Network device.WIndows Vista will try to reinstall and asks for a driver, since it cannot find the original Vista driver.Specify the path to the Windows XP driver, supplied with the computer. Note: You may also try to update the driver from within the device manager.
