Strange lockup issue with Windows 7 Build 7000 Start Menu, Please comment!
I can't possibly believe I'm the only one seeing this issue but can't find it in my searches of the same problems. I've been test driving the newest Windows 7 for a few weeks now and I seem to be running into an issue I wanted to see if anyone else had encountered and/or figured out a way to fix.I'll first say that I'm very pleased by the Windows 7 offering and will finally make the jump from XP when it finally releases. I've been testing the OS on two semi-old machines; a Gateway M450 laptop that I've had since 2004 (1.7ghz centrino and 1Gb of RAM) and my wife's old Dimension 8600 she's had since high-school (about 5 years old also, 2.ghzP4 processor, 1.5GB Ram). The OS itself runs beautifully on these systems and has breathed new life into what I thought were now systems ready to be put out to pasture. There is one issue though I have encountered with the start menu on BOTH systems that I can't seem to get around. I have already reported this "Bug" to MS if that is in fact what it is, but I wanted to see if I was alone.Browsing folders under Start --> All Programs seems to lock up my processor with certainfolders, namely games. I thought the issue was related to the sidebar process at first as the performance monitors I had running would go haywire. In fact, it is only the games folder that causes this lockup. It starts to query the icons and suddenly stops, almost always while loading certain games. When this occurs, my CPU usage will spike to 100% and the only way to fix it is to kill and restart explorer.exe through the task manager or just wait for it to pan itself out, which it usually will after some time. With the sidebar process disabled, the issue seems to persist. As I said this issue occurs on both my desktop and laptop, and I'm not sure if it's just related to the age of the machine, the fact they're just single core processors, or what. My produciton box runs on a RAID array that the beta won't recognize my controller for, so I can't test it on a multi-core processor to judge. Also, If you right-click all programs and go to open all users to view it in explorer, you can go into the programs folder and make a new folder(s) which I like to do to group similar program folders. Creating the folder is not an issue, however on both machines I have discovered if you try to rename the folder from the default "New Folder," you get this error:"Action cannot be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program." (options are try again or cancel, the former does nothing but reproduce the same error). This is of course ridiculous since there is nothing in the folder to be used. Please don't let me be alone in this error on both of my machines. I really think this is something Microsoft needs to look into before release!! Your feedback is most welcome. Thanks!!!AH

Hi earendurth Yep, you must be the only one seeing this? Just kidding. :) This is a known bug and has been officially confirmed. There is no fix at the present time, but keep an eye on these forums for updated information. Regards, Ronnie Vernon MVP

Thanks so much for the response and peace of mind. I'm glad these problems, insignificant as they may be will be corrected by final release. If that is fixed along with the RAID controller recognition issues I have also encountered and seen others report, this user will have no complaints with Windows 7. I wish you all the best. Thanks again! AH
