Strange Network Adapters Shown in Device Manager
I posted the following in Vista Newsgroup (Networking) and received only one answerfrom a person with thesame problem. Wonder if someone on this forum has the answer. Thanks. Vista RC-1 (Build 5600)Under Network Adapters in Device Manager, my system shows the following two adapters (both with yellow exclamationpoints); both are shown with Microsoft drivers: 6TO4 AdapterISATAP In properties, both say "Windows cannot load drivers required for this device (Code 31)".Clicking Update Driver returns message "The best driverfor this device is already installed". I know ISATAP is a sort of translator between IPV6 and IPV4.I assume that from the filename (six to four), 6TO4 mustalso have something to do with IPV4 and IPV6.The ISATAP entry appeared about a month ago; the 6TO4 lastweek. Neither my home network or Internet Dialup seem tobe affected; both are working fine. Any ideas as to where these DM entries originated, or their purpose?

Maybe that's due to 3rd party network service caused this. If you're sure they're useless, you can safely remove them, but as your connection is ok, keep them, maybe they're uniquely added from your own Vista (differs from system configuration to another). Good luck

Checked the KB a month ago on ISATAP but didn't find anything, but there is now a KB article . Simply acknowledgesexistence of problem, and in effect says "Don't worry about it...ISATAP isworking fine even though DM shows it as not loaded". Don't rememberthe article number but just go to the KB and search for "ISATAP".Nothing on 6TO4.

Okay here goes. Had this very problem with 6TO4 adapter shown not working and after dealing with Dell, Microsoft and another tech found my own solution to FIX this! Ready? On the adapter with the errors, right click and try to remove. If it doesn't uninstall that's exactly what mine was doing as it wasn't installed right in the first place. Now here's where the techs didn't figure it out. There should be a choice about running or installing Legacy for this device. Do it. Now it should reinstall and still fail with an error. Now try to uninstall the device completely. For some reason this series worked so that my 6to4 is fine and reports working correctly. May need to reinstall the drivers but all driver searches were done from my pc. Vista home basic build 6000 if it helps. Good luck, tried to get this fixed for three days. Thanks. I have given up on this problem (if it is one!), since disabling or removing ISATAP or 6TO4 seems to have no effect on my dialup connection. Right now I have both disabled, and system works OK. Removingsimply causes system to create them again on reboot (with the yellow exclamation mark in DM). The MS KB article that I referenced says todisregardDM warningon ISATAP so guess the same probably applies to 6TO4 since both are part of the tunnel process. And asking Windows to"search for solutions" has no effect ...assume this is because MS has discontinuedsupport (other than Defender updates) for beta builds. (I am still running RC-1). Thought it would be corrected in final release, but since you have the problem it appears that it wasn't fixed.

There seems to be plenty of people with this problem, but none of the replies that I have seen attempt to explain in any way what the adaptor is and what function it performs. That is the 6TO4 adaptor. Hoping someone will explain aussie-reg from down under

Curious, if you found any information on the 6TO4 adaptor? I have the same problem, I noticed another poster had a fix however with Vista, I'm not sure where the "RUN" is on this operating system, like Windows XP. Thanks, Cher

I have 4 port external powerd USB hub. If I unplug hub and then plugit back in, the device is dead. After running Systme diagnostic from"Reliability andPerformance Monitor this is theerror given: ISATAP adapter is reporting "tv_ConfigMgrErr31". Soundlike same Thread posting but I can not prove that this error message has any thing to do with the plug and play of Dell's Inspiron 1420 internal USB I am having trouble with. Additionally all USB ports are in-active on thisDell Inspiron 1420 untillpreforming a restart. I have run"Device Manager" >Universal Serial Bus controllers >Scan for hardware changes, but no detection of change even after pluging USB in to main Device USB ports.

I've been having this exact same problem for about a month or so now."Under Network Adapters in Device Manager, my system shows the following two adapters (both with yellow exclamationpoints): Microsoft ISATAP Adapter and Microsoft ISATAP Adapter # 3. In properties, both say "Windows cannot load drivers required for this device (Code 31)".Clicking Update Driver returns message "The best driverfor this device is already installed". "I figured it was happening since I installed the 2009 version ofNorton Internet Security Suite 360 system. My computer kept shutting off at random and beeping. Sometimes several timesa day.I had to keep restarting it and sometimes it would shut right backdown.I just finally uninstalled Norton and intalled another virus control software, and so far the computer is not shutting down anymore, BUT the Device /ASATAPdriver problem is still showing. I also have Vista, 32 bit. Got the computer back in 2007. It's been mostly OK til now.Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Both the ISATAP and 6to4 adapters are normally hidden so to see if they are there you need to select Show hidden devices in the View option for Device Manager. Unless you do this they only show up in Device Manager when they have a problem.Many/most Vista computers do nothave the 6to4 adapter installed soI don't think you need to get it back if it really is not there.

Good point. Most of the problems are with the 3rd party devices. Sprint, T Mobile and so forth that offer wireless internet access down grade ip6 connectivity to ip4. That's because they use file compression for download data burst in the connection software that comes with the device. If the device is working, you can disregard the explamation point.

I have almost the same problem, as a matter of fact mine spelled itself out: Microsoft ISATAP-2 error code 31, all the info u get from the property and result of updating came up the same way yours do but can't get no help, as a result I think thats why my DVD burner stopped burnning while Cd burner burns, I don't know the sifference btw DVD and CD burner since both goes in the same hole. Hey since microsoft is not responding to fix this problem, in case u do find any help, pls link me up - friend. I think though that is microsoft problem.
