Strange, unimportant, but bewildering issues with WMP and W7
I have a large music library, maintained with Windows Media Player. When I did the RTM install of Windows 7, approximately 66% of the desktop.ini files in the music library folder were changed somehow, and now reflect the date of modification which is the same as the date that I installed Windows 7. However, the other 33% of the desktop.ini files have dates much earlier, probably when I ripped the music from the CD. Question 1: Why were most desktop.ini files modified to the date of my Windows 7 installation? No problems with WMP, but just curious as to why this happened, and why all the desktop.ini files in the music folder were not modified. Also, looking at the desktop.ini files (in the music folders), some were Desktop.ini, and others were desktop.ini. Curious about these, and obsessed with uniformity, I changed a few of the d to D. A refresh of the folder shows that they were able to revert to the d. Question 2: Why? No problems with WMP, playing or ripping, sorting or searching the music. All appears to work correctly. But, why date issue, and the d vs D issue? Doc

Hello Doc, Desktop.ini is used to tell Windows how to display a folder. For example, enabling Thumbnail view creates a desktop.ini file in that folder which amongst other things, tells Windows to add an extra item to the View menu for that folder. Desktop.ini files are also used when customizing folders, change their icons etc. After installing Windows 7, most folders wil be updated, so the desktop.inifiles was modified. In regard to the "Desktop.ini" or "desktop.ini", this is by design. There's no different between "Desktop.ini" and "desktop.ini". Thomas Lin

I know what they do. That was not the question. The question was specific as to why 33% of the files in my music library WERE NOT MODIFIED, and why "D" kept getting changed back to "d". If no difference between Desktop.ini and desktop.ini, then why did WMP (or W7) care about the case of the D?Doc
