Stop left mouse clicks from going to rename mode.
I want to stop left mouse clicks from putting any file or folder name into rename mode at ANY speed. I want to completely disable this nuisance once and for all. It is an extremely annoying BUG in all Windows versions since 95. (Using XP Pro SP3) For this infrequent operation F2 or the menu selection from a right click is more than enough. How can this annoyance be terminated? Thanks. SS

If this is "an extremely annoying BUG in all Windows versions since 95. (Using XP Pro SP3)" how come I have neither experienced it nor heard of it before? I do not, and have never before, expereinced this phenomenon! So, you have a unique situation that is virtually impossible to diagnose without have much more information. You apparently have, and have has, something peculiar with your system configuration causing this! Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Rick, It's not something I configured. It's hard wired into the Windows operating system, and I would like to find some way to configure Windows to eliminate this problem. Using XP Pro/SP3, not Windows 7 - a bloated rip-off which I wouldn't use even if it were free. (I had originally posted this elsewhere but some genius moderator moved it here). Again, I want to stop left mouse clicks from putting any file or folder name into rename mode at ANY speed (when clicking on file or folder trying to open it). If this is something you haven't "expereinced", maybe with a little more experience you'll understand what I'm talking about.

Here's how to reproduce what Steve is talking about: 1 - Click any file on your desktop or within a folder. The file must be highlighted. 2 - Then click the text label of the file. It will allow you rename it. This only happens if you click again on the already-highlighted icon, and only if you click on the words (not the picture of the icon). This may be why Rick was not able to reproduce it, it requires very specific circumstances. There is no option to disable this in Windows. Not so specific. If you just double click on any file or folder name a little too slowly, it does not open but goes into rename mode. The reason I call this a bug is that it is an annoying property of Windows, (like characters going to lower case when you hit shift while the caps lock is on) that should be addressed with a patch in Windows Update because there is no known way to fix it. It really is a nuisance and completely unnecessary and it's been going on long enough. As I said before, renaming by hitting F2 or the menu selection from a right click is more than enough.

It's still only if you click on the text label. But point taken, and please do send feedback to the link below, I see no reason why this can't at least be an option in the folder options: http://mymfe.microsoft.com/Windows%207/Feedback.aspx?formID=195 If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle. One more time: This is a bug that has infected every version of Microsoft windows since Windows 95. I want a solution - and I have absolutely ZERO interest in Vista or 7, both bloated pigs which continue to have this bug. So your suggestion is not only not helpful, it is unwelcome. If someone has something to offer which can solve this problem, I will absolutely appreciate it. Otherwise. please go play somewhere else.

If it has existed since Windows 95, then it would be more logical to presume it is by design and not a bug. If it were a bug, it would have been corrected a looooooong time ago! Perhaps the only thing about it is that it bugs you! Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. It's not a bug or problem that needs fixed or a solution, because it's working precisely as it was designed to be. Therefore it will get no action for any released version. However, feedback for future versions is considered and design changes may be taken into account. Remember, this only happens if you click again on an already-highlighted icon, and even then only if you click on the words (not the picture of the icon). If an icon is already highlighted, you probably don't have any reason to click it again other than if you want to rename it (otherwise, why would you click it again?). (Left) click once on the file name to select, second time to open. (DUH) I don't want the second click to do anything else. Yes, it us a bug, a totally unnecessary function - a nuisance, not a feature. So I how do I fix this?

If you click twice slower than your double-click threshold, the program will see it as two individual clicks. If the second of those clicks is on the text of the icon, you'll go into rename mode. This is how it was designed to work. You can: • Lower your double-click speed so that it registers as a double-click even if you are very slow • or click on the icon and not the text • purchase another operating system that pleases you According to the Oxford Dictionary: bug, noun: a fault or defect in a computer program, causing unintended operation. Since this function was designed to behave this way, it's not a bug. I'm sure it can be an annoyance, but not a defect. If this was helpful, please vote by clicking the green triangle. You have no concept of the difference between a "bug" and something that is a built in feature that just happens to be an inconveneince to you? If it irritates you that much, then go by an Apple. Maybe Apple doesn't have this "bug!" If I remember correctly, Linux has the exact same "bug" in it!Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. In fact, Linux DOES have this same "bug"..amazing! about the only difference is i think someone in the linux world made some sort of script that removes it. oh wellOk, so I changed my name...you can still call me Tom if you like. It's a...jump...to conclusions...mat.

It isn't a bug simply because you don't like the design. So I how do I fix this? You don't. Contact Microsoft and ask them to change the design. If they get enough such recommendations they might consider it in the next version of Windows. Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP

I have to agree that if this is not a bug then it has to be bad design. Try this: Right click on a file and wait for the context sensitive menu to appear. Decide that none of the operations in the menu meet your requirements. Click back on the file to remove the context sensitive menu. Voila!! windows wants to rename the file. Try not to accidentally delete the name by touching just about any key on your keyboard. A bit stupid you have to admit. This must be very deep in the windows O/S layers because it happens in any program that uses file management and it is equally annoying.
