Stop Taskbar Icon Refresh on Startup
Every time I am loading Windows (after a reboot or normal startup), the taskbar icons turn into those "white paper" generic icons and then load back into the normal icons. It is like it is running a refresh of the icon cache every time I boot up. I am running Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I tried disabling all of my startup applications with no effect. Is there some kind of registry edit I can perform to fix it? This has been bothering me for quite some time and any help would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!

Hi, “the taskbar icons turn into those "white paper" generic icons and then load back into the normal icons. “ I think Windows is loading the icon at that time, but not refreshing as you said. It is a common behavior and you cannot disable it. However, the loading time depends on the performance of your machine. If it takes only few seconds, you could ignore it. Please let me know how much time does it take? And how many icon on your desktop? It's true it only takes a few seconds. But it still bothers me because one, it didn't used to do this and two, I have a solid state drive, 8gb of ram, and a 2gb video card. Performance shouldn't be an issue. I have 0 icons on my desktop and 23 pinned on my taskbar. I seriously doubt it's a loading issue because all the icons show up BEFORE the generic icons appear. Then they reappear again after a few seconds. Sometimes even up to 8 seconds later. Thanks for your response and any additional ideas would be greatly appreciated :D!

I've been experiencing this lately too, and it is really annoying - especially when you have a computer which shouldn't have performance issues at all :P. I think 'zhen tan' didn't fully understand you, that the normal ones load first, its pretty weird. I can't seem to find a solution yet too :/

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Hopefully we'll find a solution soon. I've kind of given up on it...

I am having this annoying issue as well with Windows7 - 64. I had the identical problem with XP. There was a fix for XP that was a simple registry edit. I wish I could remember it. Seems no one knows how to use regedit these days or can offer a fix.
