Static IP and Home Network
Hello. I can not set up 'Home Network' between 2 Windows 7 computers :( This is global picture: Main computer: Running Windows 7, have 2 network cards. One card (I call it 'cable network') set up to receive all addresses automaticly from router (IP, DNS, Gateway etc...) and it working ok as expected. (local addresses like 172.69.15. etc..) To connect to internet I should run VPN dialer to local ISP and all traffic should go throught router defined on first network card ('cable-network'). And this connection will receive dynamic _real_ IP address to browse on internet. Second network card should connect to another computer and I set up static IP address for it: 10.0.0.1 mask: 255.0.0.0 (and second computer running Window 7 can connect to this card/computer - no problem). To share internet connection (NAT, etc..) I made VPN dialer connection shared with home-net (10.x.x.x) but this require to reset all _my_ data and set Windows default/random addresses like 169.x.x.x The problem starting when I try to share between 2 computers. The second computer (client) found local net (10.x.x.x or 169.x.x.x) and set upi 'Home network' and have shared libraries - no problem here. The first computer (that connected to internet) also found the network but set the status to 'Public' undentify network and refuse to share or set up 'home network'. As I understand the problem is that I didn't define 'Gateway' but I don't know what is my gateway untill I connect to internet - this is dynamic data. If I chnage 'home-net' adapter settings to _my_ addresses like: 10.x.x.x it can not be shared with VPN dialer. If I accept Windows default/random IP addresses like: 169.x.x.x connection can be shared with VPN dialer but 'Home network' could not be set up in both cases. So the question is: How I should configured my local/home network so I can browse internet from every computer and have 'Home network' between 2 computers ? How does it work when you try to change the network type to Home Network? What is the current status after you open Network and Sharing Center? If the main computer connects to a router, can you just connect the second computer to the router? If so how does it work? You can also try to manually change the network to Home Network. Please open Registry, open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles\{GUID}, change the value of the key Category under the branch to “0” to change the network to Home Network.Arthur Xie - MSFT
