Static IP address shows blank in GUI but network still works (somewhat).
I have an issue where at least 2 machines in my environement have a blank IPv4 address showing in the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties page. The computer is connected to the network and I am able to connect to it remotely using DameWare but when I try to run a NetSH command on the system it fails. The issue happens on two different hardware types (one a Lenovo T410 and the other an Hp Netbook). I thought there might be an issue with the hardware but everything else seems to be working properly and the computer models are identical to others we have deployed in our environment that are not experiencing this issue.

Hi, Could you please make a screenshot for me? You can Upload to SkyDrive There are some suggestions you can try: 1 Update network card drive 2 Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults, type: netsh int ip reset reset.log Reboot PC 3 Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults, type: netsh winsock reset catalog Reboot PC Furthermore, please open CMD and type ipconfig /all, then post the result to me. Thank you for your cooperation. Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. Hi, Sorry for my late reply. Could you manually configure IP address on that PC? According to the result of ipconfig, there’s no DHCP server on your workaround. Did the issue appear before? Please update the NIC card to the latest version, also update BIOS. Furthermore, you can disable NIC card, then enable it again to see the result. Hope that helps. The PC is at a site that does not have DHCP available. The option that is working is to set it up as a static IP address. However if the user reboots their system they loose the information and have to enter it in again. We have imaged 40 others of this model using the exact same driver set and there are no issues. On a different machine (a Lenovo T410) I re-imaged it 3 times and it had the same issue each time. The issue definitely persists through reboots so I think we can rule out disabling the NIC as a fix. We have also had this issue on a Lenovo M58. There does not appear to be any commonality other than Windows 7 and all the applications we install in our image. But why would only certain systems have the problem and others are fine.

Hi, Please logon with Safe Mode with networking to see if the same issue occurs. If the issue persists in Safe Mode with networking, the components may corrupted on your machine. You can try to perform an in-place upgrade for test: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 Hope that helps. Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. How could the components get corrupted? We currently have 3 computers with this issue. We have correlated the problem to: HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID of NIC} In one of the problem computers the IPAddress, DefaultGateway and SubnetMask keys were missing. If we re-create these keys and put the correct data in them the computer retains its IP address after a reboot but still shows it blank in the GUI view.

Third party tools or some incompatible programs may cause the issue. Furthermore, you can perform a whole disk scan, run SFC /scannow to check system files Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support in forum. But if third party tools or incompatible programs were the issue wouldn't that happen on every computer given the fact that we are using the same image and third party tools on each one? Why does it only happen on 3 computers (so far)?

In the registry HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID of NIC}, check if the IP address has a blank space at the end, also check other entries. If that doesnt work, try uninstalling the NIC from device manager, then reset the TCP/IP stack using netsh int ip reset netsh winsock resetSumesh P - Microsoft Online Community Support

I am having the same issue and my registry settings do not have any blank entries or spaces in the entries. I have tried resetting the TCP/IP stack and resetting Winsock in numerous variations, including uninstalling the NIC first, but this has not helped. When I try to set the IP address manually through the netsh command, I get an Element not found error. I verified that the the name of the NIC is the same in the NIC settings and the netsh command line that I am entering. Do you have any other ideas about why this may be happening?

Please go ahead and delete the following value HKLM\system\ccs\control\network config reg_binary reboot and the value will be rebuilt with information from the adapter registry location. Sumesh P - Microsoft Online Community Support Unfortunately, this did not resolve the issue. I think the root cause has something to do with the way NETSH sees the name of the NIC as Local Area Connection. If I run the NETSH command to change the NIC name to anything other than Local Area Connection, for instance LAN, then the NETSH commands work fine. If I run the NETSH commands when the NIC is named Local Area Connection, they do and change nothing on the NIC settings. NETSH commands also run fine if I reference the Idx #. There must be some NIC naming conflict, but none that I can find. Here is how they show: Idx Met MTU State Name --- ---------- ---------- ------------ --------------------------- 1 50 4294967295 connected Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 14 5 1500 disconnected Wireless Network Connection 12 20 1500 connected Local Area Connection I ultimately need to find out how to get NETSH to recognize and run commands using the default NIC name of Local Area Connection.

Have you checked to see if your router is assigning ip addresses through obtained MAC addresses? This causes the appearance of no Static IP address entered on the computer but it is assigned as static when the computer connects to the router through the MAC address on the network adapter. I have used this configuration for security purposes and this may be what has been done for you. Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not causing the issue in my case, as this is not how we are configured.

I am out of other options, it will be difficult to trace the issue without directly accessing the machine and taking advanced debug logs. If necessary please review the available paid support options. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;en-us;offerprophone The only thing i can think of right now is to simply update the Networking modules on the box, are you on SP1 yet? Here are some of the latest versions of binaries that you can install on the PC http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2386184 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2482122 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2469100 Sumesh P - Microsoft Online Community Support
