Static Gateway with dynamic IP?
Our office network has two gateways. One is a lot faster than the other. We want all our users to use the faster gateway and only the slower gateway when the fast one is unavailable. The only way we have been able to force them to use the faster gateway is by setting their TCP/IPv4 to a static IP and default gateway. If we set it to a dynamic IP and in the 'Advanced' options set it to use the faster gateway, we can tell it's still using the slower gateway based on the whatsmyip result from their pc browser. How can we configure them in Windows 7 to have a dynamic ip, and use the faster gateway with the slower one as the fallback? Thanks!

Where do they get the dynamic IP from? That is where you need to make the change. A machine set to get its IP automatically sends a broadcast on the network. A DHCP server on the network replies with an offer. If you want to change the default gateway address a client machine receives, you have to change it in this DHCP server.Bill

How do you connect the servers and computers? An easier solution is change the network distribution, make metric of the faster DHCP server less than the metric of the slower server.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Thanks! This is very helpful. Unfortunately we arestuck for now.Our mail server must go out the slower gateway. And our mail server is also our DHCP server! So I think we're stuck until we have separate servers for DHCP and Email. Thanks so much for your responses!
