Startup repair offline
Hello, Last week installed new PC with Windows 7 Pro. It's in a domain and we have a WSUS Server, so all updates where ready to be installed. After installing all of the updates the Pc did boot but hang while processing the updates. Tried the following to repair: 1. Last Good Know Configuration 2. Safe Mode 3. System Recovery Options With the System Recovery and the the startup repair I get the following message : problemsignature: Problem event name: startup repair offline Problem signature 01: 6.1.7600.16385 Problem signature 02: 6.1.7600.16385 Problem signature 03: Unknown Problem signature 04: 21200769 Problem signature 05: AutoFailover Problem signature 06: 13 Problem signature 07: no root cause OS version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 The System Recovery Options: - Startup Repair - System Restore - System Image Recovery - Windows Memory Diagnostics - Command Prompt But the only option I get is the Startup Repair? Also with a bootable Windows 7 Installation DVD. So have the following question: a. Is there a way to solve this problem? b. Why is there only 1 option available in the System Recovery Options? Hope to hear from you guys. Kind regards.

Hi, If the issue happen when installed Windows update, usually we can perform a system restore to solve the issue. For your symptom, I suggest to boot into Safe Mode first. Go to Start > Search > type "cmd". Rightclick cmd.exe > Choose "Run as administrator". Type in the following command and hit ENTER: sfc /scannow Repair any faults that comes up. If no error disappear, go to Start > Search > type "rstrui" > Hit ENTER. Then restoring to a previously known working restore point Hope that helps. Hi, Did you receive any error message when you click other options on WinRE? Try to change another installation disc for test, also check if any unnecessary hardware connect with PC (USB drive etc.) Regards, Leo Huang TechNet Subscriber Support If you are TechNet Subscription user and have any feedback on our support quality, please send your feedback here.Leo Huang TechNet Community Support

Since this issue is that the machine can't boot into desktop, I think it would be urgent for you, could you please try the in-place upgrade? This is a quick solution. How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade on Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 & Windows Server 2008 R2 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2255099 Before reinstalling the system, this is the last option for system file corrupt issue(I think there would be some system files corrupted since you can't boot into safe mode either), and the impact is smaller than a fresh installation. Thanks Zero Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. As you mentioned that you will see the following options when booting from the DVD: "The System Recovery Options: - Startup Repair - System Restore - System Image Recovery - Windows Memory Diagnostics - Command Prompt" 1. Have you tried to use the "Startup Repair" option? If it works? 2. If you have created any restore point, then you can use "system restore". 3. If you have created backup of your machine, then we can use "system image recovery". 4. Use "Command Prompt" to run "sfc /scannow" and restart the machine to check if it works now. 5. If none of them works, then the only solution is to reinstall the machine since we can't log into the desktop now. Thanks. Thanks Zero Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Usually there would be a restore point created when installing update. 2. Since you have rebuilt the machine, it may be hard to troubleshoot the issue now. Have you checked if you can see the options(Windows Memory Diagnostic and Command Prompt) now with the new installation? Thanks Zero Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Insert the Windows DVD and boot it . Now from the menu list select the Command Prompt option. At the DOS prompt type the following three commands: bootrec.exe /fixmbr bootrec.exe /fixboot (may return an 'Eliment not found' message) bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd Close the command prompt window and click the Startup Repair option. The repair process may take some time, so wait until the process complete . Remove the System Repair DVD and click Restart. Reboot the computer.
