Startup problem; XP continually reboots. Cannot read files
I have a startup problem with a computer running Windows XP SP1a upgraded to SP3. It belongs to another member of my family, who has switched the power off when an intermitent mouse problem prevented the normal shutdown procedure. At startup it shows the startup options screen from which if I choose either "Safe Mode" or "Start Windows Normally" it loads normally to point where it displays the flying Windows screen for a while, goes blank briefly, then reboots. I have tried starting it into Repair Mode using the Windows Installation Disk in the hope of repairing the startup files, but am having problems reading the files on the C; drive. If I try to examine files, or change to a different folder, I get error messages such as "invalid Drive specification" or "An error occurred during directory enumeration" I assume that this is because the XP SP1a installation disk which I am using cannot manage the 80 Gb hard disk and the NTFS file format. Is there some way in which I can obtain access to the startup files OldZ801 person needs an answerI do too

I have solved the problem After posting this question, I ran CHKDSK from the repair mode and it corrected an error in the file system and I was able to start Windows. As a precaution, I Have since set a system restore point to a few days earlier than when the problem occurred, and everything is going well now. OldZ80
