Starting Windows 7 Backup : Server execution failed(0x80080005)
Running a Sony VGN-NS140E laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium x64. This was a "clean" install versus an upgrade install. When I try to "Set up backup" under "Backup and Restore" I get an error "The backup application could not start due to an internal error: Server execution failed(0x80080005)". I am running Comodo x64 Internet Security (Firewall, AntiVirus, AntiSpyware) and am not running a system registry cleaner or optimizer in the background, although I have run CCleaner as a registry cleaner in the past. I do not know if this is a new or old problem as this is the first time I tried to use Windows Backup. I did try starting both Volume Shadow Copy service and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service , they both successfully started but Windows Backup still produces this error. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi, This issue can be caused by third party conflicts, lets try Backup in Clean boot mode. Clean Boot======================This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:1. Click the Start Button and type "msconfig" (without quotation marks) in the Search Box and press Enter.2. Select the Services tab in the open window. Check the Hide all Microsoft Services option and click Disable All.3. Switch to the Startup tab and click Disable All.4. Click OK to save the settings and select Restart when prompted.5. Check whether or not the error still occurs. Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't adversely affect the system or other programs. We can still manually run these programs later. In addition, you can try to backup a small file using the following steps to test this issue. 1. Open Control Panel ans start creating a backup from the Backup and Restore center.2. Select the Location in order to save backup data.3. Once you have chosen your location, you can now choose what to backup. let's choose the option "Let me choose". Note: uncheck the option before the "Include a system image of drivers: Unnamed driver". 4. Now you can start your backup process. If you still get the error, please collect a screenshot for the error messge, and the screenshot for the Disk Manager to let us know the hard driver useage, then upload them to thePublic folder in theSkyDrive. I hope this can help you.John

Ok ... I've shut down all non-essential services and the error still occurs. Problem is, I took a snapshot of what you told me to take and for the life of me can't find an "upload" option anywhere on the link you sent for Skydrive. Sorry for the dumbness, but you have me stumped. Will keep looking .... Edit - OK, think I got it. I uploaded the files to the "Public" folder under my profile (thepiratemorgan). I think you can access them that way I hope. If not please lead me the way to upload them to the Skydrive page you linked me to. Anyway, I did fail to mention that this machine is a dual boot with Windows XP Pro on the D:\ Drive. I have not accessed Win XP in quite some time (probably going to remove it soon). I can't remember if I accessed it since this "clean" install of Win 7 HP x64, although I'm leaning toward that I did. Don't know if that's any useful information, just wanted to mention it.

Hi,I can't access your Public folder, can you post the link for analyzing? In addition, please make sure the"Startup Type" of the two services (Volume Shadow Copy service and Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service) are "Automatic". After that, please test backup again.Sincerely!John

Ok ... here is the link for my public folder on Skydrive --- http://cid-e5113eb9cfac7b80.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public Hopefully that works for you. I looked up those services under MSCONFIG and do not see where I can change them to "automatic". Both are currently stopped. I previously thought I started them using instructions from another thread with similar problem. In fact, I believe you had posted the instructions. So I do not know how to change the "Startup Type" to "Automatic".

I have got the error message, at this point, you can try the following steps to start those services:1. Click the Start Button, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the Start Search box and press Enter. 2. Double click the Volume Shadow Copy service. 3.Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". 4. Click OK to save the changes.5. Repeat the same steps with the Microsoft Software Shadow Copy Provider service. Then restart the computer and try to make a backup again. If you get any error, please feel free to let us know.Sincerely!John

Hmm ... that was funny. Looks as though my last post didn't post. Anyway, I tried your steps above and it did not work. I am getting the exact same error. But to be honest, EVERYTHING as far as my files are concerned, are backed up on another computer on the network or an external drive. So maybe not having Windows Backup not working isn't such a bad thing. And I can't "Create a System Image" either ... it gives me the same error. I haven't tried "Create a System Repair Disc" because I have the original .iso of Win 7 Home Premium x64 that I received from Digital River using the student upgrade so I don't think I need that. And there are third party apps like Comodo Backup that I could try. Just not happy that I have a Windows program that is not working properly or is corrupt, makes me wonder about the rest of the OS install. Anyway, that's where my situation stands ... I await further instructions and thanks again for the help so far. The Pirate Morgan

Thank you ... My problem has not been resolved, even with Mr. Cena's guidance. Thanks, John. I will keep an eye out for a solution though and please post here as I get an e-mail when this thread is updated. I haven't turned to third party apps yet, as I would like a (Windows) backup solution to Windows 7. Again, thanks for posting here almost a month since my last post ... that was extra effort on your part Soudamini. Koudos to you :-)

Thanks for your continued trust on windows backup. Since many customers were on vacation last month, we were not able to proceed with the investigation. If you can help me in speeding up the investigation, can you please drop me a mail to Soudamini [dot]Sreepada [at] microsoft [dot]com?ps: The actual windows forum is Backup - Windows and Windows Server. Please request to post there for better traction.Thanks,S.Soudamini.This posting is provided "AS IS" without warranties and confers no rights.

This posting is provided "AS IS" without warranties and confers no rights. Has there been anyresolution to this issue. I am receiving same error on a Toshiba notebook runniong Window7 Home Premium 64 bit. Thanks Not as of late, I am subscribed to this thread and another thread and I am the original poster. Although I am doubtful that a fix will ever happen, it has been since December 1st 2009 that I posted this problem. I have another post about same issue in another forum (apparently the correct forum for this problem). That thread is here : http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsbackup/thread/29bd3fc9-9538-4d82-9b13-96263c4f2f73/ And you should keep an eye (subscribe) to that thread, as I believe that is the more current thread. At least that's where the Microsoft employee has responded to most recently as "working on a solution, please stand by".

Thank you so much for this. I was about to do yet another re-install of Windows7 64bit Home Premium. I tested the external hard drive with a backup for my laptop and it works fine. I used the Takeover software (http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ ) to get access to the file "System Volume Information). However, the Backup Catalogue does not respond to a takeover, nor can I delete it. I tried safe mode. But it is the same there. So I'm convinced that this is the location of the problem, but cannot do anything to deal with it. I wonder if there is any other magic out there?Ulrike
