Start Screen right click menu doesn't appear in Windows 8.1 Update 1

Hey Everyone

Although I have updated my Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Update 1 the right click menu doesn't appear in the Start screen.

Even the option Icons doesn't show in the bottom like earlier. All i does when right click an item is that its selected with a tick.

Although I have updated my Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Update 1 the right click menu doesn't appear in the Start screen.

Apparently that is now WAD depending on your "pointer device".  For Touch the most reliable method seems to be to get to the Customize button (swipe up from the bottom?), tap on it and then you can both tap or push to select (Touch right-click equivalent) any item.  I guess this is to try to help people who couldn't do a tile selection without inadvertently launching one?

Where are these changes documented?  Where is this update's ReadMe?...

lacks detail.

To see the Customize button?  Looks like you need to press Win-Z.  Open the OSK  if necessary.

Hi,

I think this problem probably caused by Registry key, I tried to use Process Monitor to capther system activity while right clicking stroe app, find these two registry key most possible relate with Menu, please check it in your system:

HKCU\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps\.Default\MenuPopup\

HKCR\Launcher.ImmersiveApplication\shell\open

In addition, it would be better to use Process Monitor to caputer system activity by yourself. Maybe you can find some clues.

I have two PCs both with Windows 8.1 Update 1 x64 Pro, one is OK, the other one has this problem. I checked these registry entries and they where the same on both PCs, so I assume the problem lies elsewhere.

Hi, DarkUltra,

Since you have two PC with Windows 8.1 Update 1. I would like to suggest you use Process Monitor to capture their process activity when Right Click tiles, then made an comparison  between with them, maybe we could find the reason.

@ Roger

How do we know what is WAD and what is a problem?

What is the perceived problem?  No right-click menu for Touch?  That looks like it could be intended.  No Customize menu for mouse?   That seems to be intended too.  So, what kind of device is it?  Half touch and half mouse?  (E.g. Touchpad with Touch emulation enabled?)  Ergo, no right-click menu and no Customize menu.     <eg>

Hi,

Actually, I have also never seen this problem before, but recently, some other customer also encounter similar problem. We need some time to test and find the reason of this problem.

From now on, as far as I know, recreate a new User Account maybe can resolve this problem, please have a try. If it is worked, please take it as a workaround method temporarily.

If you could please save your system information to a file using MSInfo32 (System Information) and upload it to a service like OneDrive and link it here in this thread so we can look over what input devices are recognized by your system. To open system information, enter MSInfo32 while on the Start Screen and select the result on the right below the search field. In the System Information window, select File, then Save.

Themes or UI altering applications have been cited in some third party forums by users with the same issue. In these cases, removing the themes or applications resolved this issue.

Hi Deeshan.

Check if you're using custom windows theme and/or UXStyle patcher. Reverting theme to MS default solved my issue.

Buddy, i fount the problem, its because of UXpatcher. Having a UXPatched theme in, makes the context menu disappear. Most likely because they don't have any assets for them.

If you are using any UXpatched theme, then the context menu will not appear, but if you use the normal microsoft theme then it will appear.... So untill UXPatcher get a update for solving this problem, you can use [win]+[z] button to use back the touch style of customizing Tiles.. i will notify you till then.... ;) bye!

It has nothing to do with the patcher----rather the CUSTOM THEME itself. Whoever made the THEME he's using made it before the update, and so there's no addition for that context menu within the .msstyles file for that theme. Recently however theme-designers have added the 'class map' for that area in the start screen to the version of Windows Style Builder that supports Win8/8.1 and are updating their custom theme creations with the new location skinned.
