Splitting a large criteria based group into smaller nested sub groups

Hi everyone,

In our FIM 2010 (not R2) environment we have a few criteria groups groups that have a large number of members which causes long sync times.

One of these groups for example has ~56000 members so I would like to split this group up into smaller groups and make all the smaller groups a member of another group.

My first thought was to make smaller groups based upon the first initial of the accounts last name but this didn't really give an even spread. There are also a large number of accounts that do not have a last name or do not have a letter at the start and I couldn't see how you could group these accounts together.

I then thought about the MV Resource ID. I could create 16 groups each one having a StartsWith on the MV Resource ID. eg. StartsWith {1, StartsWith {2 and so on. This gives me a nice even spread of members in each group.

Is it pure coincidence that I have an even spread in each of the groups and would you recommend using the MV Resource ID as the criteria?

I do not care who is in each of the smaller sub groups as only the top level group will be used to send emails to.

Hope this makes sense and any help and advice is much appreciated.

If you don't have the exact number of members on each group, it is not the issue. Of course you want to split the load. I don't think there is a hard rule of what to use. If MV Resource ID works, then use it.  Employee ID would be another, you can also assign an arbitrary sequential integer (Custom Attribute) that can help you identify the group membership. Options are limitless.
