Sony Vaio Vgx XL301 won't restart
Hi all, we have a Sony vaio HTPC which was on Vista. Having installed the RC build 7100 ( which we are growing to love ) apart from some odd issues with Media Centre (It's prime function) whenever we try or are asked for a system restart the unit shuts down ok, then we get the post beepn and it just hangs with the Vaio logo on the screen. The only option then is to hit the power switch to turn it off then restart it, it will then boot normally... All the dvices appear to have drivers and although every thing is reported to be ok there is an odd issue that after logon there are the system sounds for something being connected and then disconnected like a USB device. Any thoughts, TIA Al.

Hello goobatec,Do you have any USB devices plugged in during startup like flash drives or external hard drives?

goobatec, If you don't have any USB devices connected and aren't using a docking station, I'm afraid that this is just a case of Sony's ACPI drivers not currently working properly under Windows 7.-Alex

goobatec, Right, that's what I was afraid of - Sony is a bit notorious for locking out any unsupported software on their notebooks (although, in their defense, this could be construed as an effort to guarantee compatibility). Until Sony is officially supporting Windows 7, or a later release of Windows 7 proves more in line with prior ACPI function calls, you're going to keep seeing this behavior.-Alex

Axfelix, thank you for the response. Please note We have two Sony computers: 1, Sony Vgn A217M Laptop which works flawlessly!!! Windows 7 RC this machine is about 5 years old... 2, Sony Vaio VGX XL301 Home Theatre Desktop PC which cost 1700.00 just 24 months ago. It's this machine that has the problem. Yesterday I restored it back to Vista and loe and behold it worked flawlessly! So, I thought I've nothing to lose here, I'll do an upgrade to Windows 7 from within Vista and see what happens... The upgrade started and the machine rebooted twice before whatever it is in 7 RC overwrote the driver that is at the root of this problem. Then guess what? NO RESTART!!! There must be some way of determining which driver this is surely, How do I do that please. Al.

Hello goobatec,Is the listed anything in Event Viewer related to this issue? This may be a good time to go through every piece of hardware with the troubleshooter in Action Center. Allow it to go online to search for solutions.-Scott

I'm seeing identical behaviour with an XL-301...no restart issues under Vista, but hangs every time under W7...just so you know you are not alone! Tennant

Same Thing here under Windows 7 64bit edition. I have a Two years old Vaio VGX-XL301 that was just updated to Windows 7 and that won't reboot properly (POST stops just after CPU detection during reboot). At least, under Windows 7 sleep states are properly managed and the machine goes to sleep and wakes up without corrupting the display driver like it did on Vista... Note also that shutdown works properly. Only reboot fails. I have checked repeatedly on Sony's site, there's been no BIOS update for this machine since launch. And by the way, Sony's famed support is a joke...

Hi thereI too have the exact same problem... Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit) works fine except that, on a restart the POST stops just after CPU detection. [Wondering if the HDDs have been places into some kind of shutdown mode that the BIOS cannot wake them up from?].Rebooting the PC works fine if it is from Vista or if Alt-Ctrl-Del is used from the boot menu. So it seems once in Windows 7 some driver or action at reboot time is placing the BIOS or attached device in some state that requires a power cycle. Wierd!Hope this gets sorted!RegardsAde

Try disabling the Firewire (1394) device driver in the BIOS...Advanced>On Board Device Configuration. That solved the restart problem for me. Not a great solution if you need to use Firewire though!Tennant
