Sony Laptop, pressing some non-Function keys results in Function Key entries PLUS entry of the original keystroke
I'm working on a Windows 7 Pro laptop (Sony) that is exhibiting behavior I've not seen before. When I press the '1' key, the system registers both the '1' key press AND an 'F1' press. i.e. if I press the number 1 on the keyboard while I have notepad open, the number '1' is entered, AND the help menu loads. The same thing happens for the 3 key. If I press '3' while in notepad, a '3' is typed and the find dialog opens (F3) This also happens in reverse, if I press the F1 key, a '1' keystroke is recorded AND so is the 'F1' keystroke. This is not specific to any application, same behavior in all apps and in windows in general. Nor is it limited to the number keys, Ex: Opening google chrome and typing a 'p' anywhere in the URL, results in not only the 'p' being entered, but also the F12 key being pressed. I've run complete malware scans with malwarebytes and vipre, nothing is found (and the computer exhibits no other typical signs of infection). I've also changed the keyboard type under regional settings, this had no bearing. I've tried to remap the keys using a program called sharpkeys, but the double key press still remains. The behavior is also present in safe mode, or when using msconfig in diagnostic mode. numlock/capslock/etc... are all off.

1. Are there any unusual applications? 2. Have you tried to go to previous restore points? 3. Have you checked consistency with sfc /scannow ? 4. Have you updated system drivers? 5. Is there any trace in Event logs? 6. If nothing helps give try to Sony support/forum. It seems that this is vendor specific problem. Regards Milos

I suspect you have a defective keyboard and you need to get it replaced. Windows does not have the capability to compensate for defective hardware. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. Hi, Did this issue occur before? Please change an external USB keyboard to check if the same issue occurs. Thats seems a hardware issue on your PC. I plugged in a USB keyboard and sure enough everything worked fine. To further confirm, I booted off a ubuntu live distribution and the laptop's keyboard exhibited the same behavior, definetly hardware. Thanks for the input.

Hi I also have a similar problem with Sony Vaio laptop. Now the laptop is almost useless. How two laptops have the same issues. This is a question you should be asking Sony since they are the manufacturer of the laptop. Microsoft is not involved in the manufacturing of Sony laptops at all. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
