Sometimes I get an alert balloon stating windows defender is not on, but it is.
why is it sometimes I get an alert balloon stating windows defender is not on? I check the security section in the action center, and it shows as on.

What's the specs on your systems? When I've seen this on Vista it's been on lower end systems.

I have Windows 7 as a virtual machine. Sometimes after startup, the Action Center starts complaining that Windows Defender is not on. After half a minute or so, the complaint disappears and everything is ok.

I also doubt this is because the machine is low-end. I think, however, that the Windows Defender service might crash (although I can't seem to find any traces of this in the Event Viewer) or it might take too long to start up, hence the warning. In my case, I'm running Windows 7 on two 2.4GHz dual-core machines with 2GB of RAM.

I agree with you Felipe...I think it's taking too long to start up.-Bob

Hi,The Diagnostics-Performance event log may tell you what is sort of timing issues are going on here. You can get to that here:eventvwr.exe --> pplications and Service logs --> Microsoft --> Windows -->Diagnostics-Performance --> Operational. Clear and save the log to make it easier to read, then reboot the computer and reproduce the issue. Then take a look at the log through eventvwr and see if there are anythings slowing down the boot/logon process that might make Defender take a long time to start. I suspect Defender is just a victim. Ned Pyle [MSFT] - MS Enterprise Platforms Support - Beta Team

I suspect Defender is just a victim. Yes, that was the case on my system. Checking the event log, I saw several instances of slow disk performance. After opening the case and checking/tightening all HD connections, the HD error no longer occurs. And I no longer get anti-virus and Defender start-up errors.
