Some Windows 7 installations seem to be stripping off URL parameters
Hi all, Some Windows 7 installations seem to be stripping off URL parameters. I have a hyperlink in a Word document that looks like this: ReferenceG_RecorderClass.html#mSetDestination So the name of the HTML page is ReferenceG_RecorderClass.html (and since there is no path it is expected to be in the same folder as the Word document). And mSetDestination is the name of a bookmark (or an 'anchor' in HTML language). Now when I click on this hyperlink within the Word doc, I expect the HTML page to be opened at the position of the bookmark, at the middle of the page if necessary. On Windows XP, this is in fact what happens. However on Windows 7 I am getting mixed results. On my own Windows 7 computer (Home Premium - 32-bit) on my local disk, the HTML page is opened only at the top of the page. Also on the browser line, I see that the mSetDestinaion parameter is not being passed. I have a friend however with a 64-bit Windows 7 O/S , and he reports to me that the HTML page is opened correctly, i.e., at the position of the bookmark, the mSetDestination parameter being passed correctly. In conclusion, it does seem that some Windows 7 installations are stripping off URL parameters. Does anybody know how to prevent this from happening? Maybe there is a Windows Registry entry that you can tweak? Thanks, avraham

Have you considered/investigated if the different behaviour is caused by different Webbrowsers (Internet Explorer 8 or 9, Firefox, Chrome etc) rather then the OS (XP, 7 32/64bit)? Or even different versions of Word/Office?

And this is not just a Word issue since when I make a PDF from the Word file, the same problem happens, i.e., the link does not pass the URL parameter. -avraham

Thanks fore the responses. >> Have you considered/investigated if the different behaviour is caused by different Webbrowsers (Internet Explorer 8 or 9, Firefox, Chrome etc) rather then the OS (XP, 7 32/64bit)? >> Or even different versions of Word/Office? Yep - I checked all those things out: different brands or versions of web browsers or or Word/Office made no difference on *my* Windows 7. Always the same result. Oh, I forgot to mention ... on my own Windows XP, this feature works as expected in IE and FF (but not in Chrome). Differences in Word versions made no difference. Actually, I think I just spent too long checking all that stuff. In retrospect, it now seems obvious that this is as Windows issue. Ideas? -avraham

There is also a virus if your on facebook that strips url's and tries to convert them into mini url's. Not sure of all the affects of this virus since I am protected from it with Norton 360 and the Norton Facebook link scan. I heard some discussion on the issue but never followedup since Norton protects against it. I am using the older version of Office products 2007 never updated to 2010 or 365 so I have no experience with the issue from that prospective. Also I am using Win 7 32 Ultimate so no experience with that issue either. I do not use the new browsers since all new browsers have security risks at banks and government sites. My main browser is Firefox 3.6 If you still think it is an OS problem run a repair on your installation if it is should put back any missing dll files or other files that maybe missing or reinstall word package. I would reinstall word package first. My outlook sometimes gets funky and I have to uninstall and reinstall to get the folders sync with the MS server. You did not indicate the word version your using. So difficult to respond to if your asking for help with this issue. Roland Wade PO1 USN Retired

I had a user report this to me today. I had been experiencing something similar with one specific web app and thought that perhaps the webapp was ignoring the parameters, but it turns out when I inspect the actual URL request, Windows is not sending the parameters. Anyone find a solution for this?
