Some Windows 7 desktops intermittently don't logoff
I have been asked to help troubleshoot a problem at a customer site where around 5% of their users have a regular problem with Windows 7 desktops not logging off. Typically the user tries to logoff in the evening, then comes in the next day, finds their computer still in the process of logging off, and repowers it. All users have a similar suite of applications. I enabled verbose messages and the computer is stuck on "Please wait for the user profile service". Checking the security logs on the DC shows that the user has actually logged off from AD while this is still going on. I don't have rights to go into the roaming profile folder, but the datestamp is updated to the logoff time, so I believe the folder is being modified. The IT support person has tried resetting the users' profiles but it doesn't help. The one thing that does seem to help is disabling roaming profiles completely. There is nothing in the logs on the desktops. Is there some way I can get more information about what Windows is actually doing during the logoff? Thanks, Carolhttp://www.wapshere.com/missmiis

Hi, Does the issue occur with the local profile? Please check the Event Logs on client computer and see if any information can help. Hi, No it doesn't happen when roaming profiles is disabled. I have repeatedly checked the event logs. As I said in the original post there is nothing at all. Is there a way I can increase the logging level to get more information written to the logs? That document does not appear to be relevant. Yeah already did that, doesn't really help. The user account is being logged off but the workstation just sits there forever saying that it is logging off. I have come across xbootmgr but the customer is completely sick and tired of this probem now and is just disabling roaming profiles for users with the problem, so I don't know I'll actually be able to get to the bottom of it.http://www.wapshere.com/missmiis

Hi, I'm having the exact issue, roaming profile in 2008R2 AD, W7 clients.... Has there been any further development on this issue? Thanks, Arthur

I have never found a solution. All the users with the problem have had their roaming profile removed - not really an ideal workaround. We may try reinstating their profiles after an upcoming fileserver migration.http://www.wapshere.com/missmiis
