Solved. Windows 7 cannot detect DVD/but just CD
Hi, We use a Sony Vaio laptop and everything was Ok... but all of a sudden a problem occurred. Neither DVDs nor CDs could be played. We used Microsoft's Fix It (Automated Troubleshooting Services) and it fixed our CD problem and we can play CDs now but now DVDs . "Fix It" reported there still was a problem but it didn't fix it. Currently, we can play CDs but not DVDs. When going to My Computer also, it cannot detect the drive when we put a DVD. Installing, codec and even deleting lower&upper filter from the registry didn't help either. Do you have any recommendation? Thanks!

This issue occurs if the multi disk installation has added filter drivers that are not compatible with the NEC drive in the DVD driver. I suggest that you follow the steps below to remove the filter drivers. Step1: Delete filter driver ===================== 1. Click "Start", in the Start Search box type "regedit" and press Enter. 2. Navigate to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 3. Right click on "Class", click "Export"; please name the file as "RegBackup" (without quotation marks) and then save it to the C:\ drive as a backup. Note: In case we need to undo the modification, we can double click this RegBackup.reg file to restore the registry key. 4. Highlight this key, on the right pane, check if the "Upperfilters" and "Lowerfilters" values are present. If so, please right click on the values and select "Delete" to remove them. After deleting filter drivers, please reload the drivers. Step2: Reinstall driver ===================== 1. Click "Start", in the Start Search box type "devmgmt.msc" and press "Enter". 2. Expand "DVD/CDROM Drives". 3. Right click the listed DVD/CD-ROM, and click "Uninstall". Please uninstall all devices. 4. Restart the computer. The drivers will be loaded automatically. If the issue still occurs, I suggest you try to find if there is any driver update for the DVD burner on the download page from Sony website.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi, Thanks for replying the post! We had tested both the solutions before. But it didn't help. Since our Sony is VGN fs740, there is not any Windows 7 driver available for it. Sony recommended us to use Vista driver instead, because Sony's tests shows that most of Vista drivers are compatible with Windows 7 as well. We uninstalled the driver and re-installed it and addressed the new-downloaded Vista driver. But DVDs cannot be played yet.

Does the system recognize the DVD? Can you just open the DVD and browse files? If the issue only occurs when you try to play a DVD with any media players, I suspect that this is a Codec issue. What is the symptom when you try to play the DVD? You may remove all installed third party Codec packs and check the result again.Arthur Xie - MSFT

Hi, Thanks for replying! No, Windows cannot identify and browse the DVD, but just the CD. Data DVDs cannot be identified by Windows either.

Does it work in Safe Mode? If it does not work either, please see Bubbapcguy’s question. If neither works, I suspect that the DVD drive is damaged. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

technocrate's response is a direct lift of Chakra Systems' post at http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-GB/w7hardware/thread/3e232ab4-1a4c-425d-96dc-4f4dac074c60 . technocrate has then placed a questionable link at the end of this response. This behavior is the "norm" for technocrate - lifting others posts and dropping them in other threads where the dropped response may or may not be relevant to the discussion at hand, and not crediting the source. This has problems because it adds noise to the thread and often confuses the original poster. It also fails to credit the original composer of the advice, and since technocrate does not post original material, technocrate is unable to respond when the original poster has further questions or requires clarification.

Hi, Technocrate, thanks! As mentioned in the first post we have tried deleting lower filter before (upper filter was not found) but it didn't help.

We will try the Safe Mode and post the result in here as soon as possible. Thanks for the explanation about marking as answer. I don' see the option "Unmark as Answer", but just a green checkmark which is "Mark As Answer". Could you please say where the former is? Thanks!

At this point, Arthur's post has only been proposed as an answer. As such, there is no need to unmark it as an answer, since it is just a proposed answer - it hasn't been marked as an answer. One would expect there to be an "Unpropose as answer" function, since there is such an activity, but maybe that function is available only to moderators, if you don't see it?

Hi, Thanks for replying the question. Yes, there is another choice titled "Unpropose As Answer", not under all the Arthur Xie's first reply.
