Software Restriction Policy - hash rule set to disallow is still letting the program run
Hello, I'm trying to configure a rule on the Local Group Policy to restrict games from launching. I'd doing this in a VM lab setting as I'm studying for the 70-680. I'm attempting to set a hash rule for a couple exe's under Program Files > Microsoft Games > Game Folder and selecting the games exe. I'm then verifying that it's set to Disallow and then setting the rule. The rule shows up in the Additional Rules area but when I go to try to run the EXE from Windows Explorer or even the Start Menu it's still running. I was able to get it to work if I setup Applocker and was successfully able to block the games from opening. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if I'm missing a step on the Software Restriction Policy and have went over the section talking about it, watched a Professor Messor video and walked along with it but having the same issue. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with SP1 in VirtualBox

Hi , To use AppLocker instead of Software Restriction Policies. Software Restriction Policies and AppLocker have the same goal, AppLocker is a complete revision of the software restriction policies that are introduced in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. If AppLocker and the software restriction policy settings are configured in the same GPO, only the AppLocker settings will be enforced on the computers that are running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Therefore, if you must use both Software Restriction Policies and AppLocker in your organization, it is the recommended practice to create AppLocker rules for computers that can use AppLocker policy, and software restriction policy rules for computers that are running earlier versions of Windows. For more information about how to use these two software restriction technologies, see the AppLocker topic in the Microsoft TechNet Technical Library: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd723678(WS.10).aspx More information, please see: How To use Software Restriction Policies in Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324036Tracy Cai TechNet Community Support
