Smart card logon: No valid certificates were found on this smart card

I am trying to domain login to Windows 8.1 using smartcard. I can successfully login to domain using a Windows 7 machine but on Windows 8.1 it reads the smartcard and it throws error: "No valid certificates were found on this smart card Please try another smart card or contact your administrator.

Why smartcard logon it is working on Windows 7 but not on Windows 8.1 ?

Hi dragos3,

What is the model of  smartcard ?Will  the smartcard not work on all the Windows 8.1 machines ?Did the smartcard work before ?Have you got any error code ?

You may need to download the driver from the manufacturer website for a compatible driver with Windows 8.1 .

If it won`t work on all the Windows 8.1 machines ,there may be a compatibility issue here .You may need to check the compatibility with Windows 8.1
Compatibility Center
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compatibility/CompatCenter/Home

It is recommended to look for help from the samrtcard manufacturer for help at the same time .

Hi MeipoXu,

Its a Feitian PKI Smartcard http://www.ftsafe.com/product/smartcard/pkicard

I tested on only one machine running Windows 8.1, I did not tested it before on Windows 8.1. No error code, where to find it in Event Viewer ?

I can't find it on the compatibility page for Windows 8.1. I will also contact their support

If I install the smartcard manager software I can see it properly under Windows 8.1 just that when I try to logon with it it throws: "No valid certificates were found on this smart card Please try another smart card or contact your administrator".

What can I do ?

Hi dragos3,

Here is a link for reference of troubleshooting the samrtcard issue.(The theory should be similar )

Troubleshooting Smart Card Plug and Play Issues

Since this is the first time to use it in the windows 8.1 machine .There is a much possibility that there is a compatibility issue here .We should ensure it can work well in Windows 8.1 .To make a device work well ,we need a compatible driver .We may need to wait for good news from the smartcard manufacturer support.

To get the log ,we may need to modify the registry .Please backup the registry before you made modifications to it .
