Smart Card Login - Card Reader Not Available
Does anybody have a solution for remote access via smart card login when a smart card reader is not available locally? Is there an option for using a OTP type device, where the user inserts their smart card into a portable reader? I have been advised that Gemalto and ActivIdentity have OTP portable smart card readers - anybody used these? Any advice grealty appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hi, if you have no smartcard reader you are not able to log in with smart card. You can try use normal login. You would like to emulate SmartCard? It is impossible... You can normally use portable Smartcard reader on you home computer. It is no problem, but you must have compatible smartcard reader and card..:( with ability to log into the windows...

Does anybody know of/can recommend any vendors that have portable smart card products available? Is it possible to use your smart card in a portable card reader to generate a OTP? And subsequently use this OTP as part of the authentication process?

You did not specify the need. Why jump to solutions? If you are looking for strong authentication for remote access try RSA soft OTP token. Works grate!

We've been very happy with Scorpion Software - not smart card per se, but they have both hardware OTP tokens and soft tokens that run on your phone or other device. Their software is extremely easy to install and configure, and if you need it, the support couldn't be better. http://www.scorpionsoft.com/Dave Nickason - SBS MVP
