Slowness related to printing from Vista PC to a shared printer attached to an XP PC
Hi All - It took a while, but I figured out how to get my new Vista laptop to see my XP laptops on my home network and, finally how to get it to see a printer attached to one of them. And it even prints!! However, when I go to select this printer (which is not the default) in any particular application, the screen is very slow to show the newly-selected printer as highlighted. In addition, if I try to click on "preferences" or "options" to change any printer settings, the application hangs and has to be terminated. So I can only print using the dafaults for the printer. Also, the print job takes longer to start up than a comparable print job between an XP PC and the printer. Any ideas on this? Thanks, Dave

Hello Dave, Before we go in-depth into this problem, you may need to let me know the model of the involved printer. Generally, similar issues are possibly caused by many possible factors. Ill include the following two steps that may help you: 1. On Windows Vista side, install the updated driver for the printer. 2. On both server and client side, temporarily turn off the firewalls and anti-virus applications. If the problem persists, please feel free to post with more details. Thanks! Cheers, Lionel

Thanks for tips. However: On Vista machine, driver was already installed and, when I go to HP site to their support area and click on the Vista version of the driver for download, it says that the Vista driver is already on your machine and there is nothing to download. Any advice on how to override that? Also, I don't even see a place/way to do a driver update for the printer under Vista. Printers don't seem to appear in device manager and, in the printers applet of the control panel, you can't do anything with the driver except see the list of driver files and their versions. Under Xp, I can usually figure out what I need; Vista seems completely counter-intuitive. Fireall is always off on XP machine that has printer attached, but I haven't tried turning it off on Vista machine yet (I had to set it to a lower security setting to even get the Vista machine to see the printer, but haven't tried turning it off entirely yet)

Hello Dave, Firstly, I still recommend you to give a try to turn off Windows Vista sides firewall and anti-virus application. Then, Dave, I think it is important to know what solution you were using to make Windows Vista-based computer to see and print via the printer connected to Windows XP. Based on that, we can go on to analyze the possible reasons that causes the slow printing performance. Besides, please also let me know the model of involved printer and if this is the only printer that is problematic in this case. Thanks! Cheers, Lionel
