Slow transfer of data to USB flash drives
When I transfer a file to a USB flash drive, the transfer is very slow. I checked my USB host controllers and they are working fine. There doesn't seem to be any hardware problems. These are Dell GX270 computers, both running XP Professional SP3. I found no solutions on anyone's support site. The controllers are Intel. I have used Driver Max, and it reports no problems - but I wonder about that program's accuracy. Has anyone ever had this problem and figured it out?Michael Skladd

Hi, 1. What is the make and the model number of the flash drive?2. Is this issue restricted to this flash drive?3. What transfer speed are you getting now? Check if the transfer rate is same on another computer. Also try using a different flsah drive on this computer and compare the transfer rate. I would ask you to update the chipset drivers from the Dell website.http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=PLX_PNT_CEL_GX270&os=WW1&osl=EN Hope this helps. Thanks and Regards:Shekhar S - Microsoft Support. Hi, thanks for the reply. The make and model of the flash drives seems to be irrelevant, because this problem is present with data transfers to every USB flash drive I own, and I have about 20 of them. The Dell link you mentioned did not lead to a solution, but thank you for your attention to my question.Yes, the issue is restricted to transfers of data to the flash drives, but not transfers to other media. You asked what transfer speed I am getting now, and I don't know how to measure that. But the speed seems to be as slow as 1.0 used to be, or even slower. The issue is present on my computers that have XP Professional (2 of them), but not on the other two I have that are running Windows 7 Home Premium. Any other thoughts? Thanks.Michael Skladd

CHECK WHETHER YOU INSTALLED THE DRIVER FOR USB 2.0,AND ALSO ENSURE THAT WHETHER YOUR USB DEVICE SUPPORT USB 2.0 TO GET THE SPEEDY TRANSFER RATE

The 2.0 drivers are in, but thanks for the reply.I should've mentioned that this is a problem that nearly always present, but NOT always. Just 80% of the time. Every time I get disgusted with waiting for a transfer of data, I look in the device manager and hardware resouces in the system info to see if the USB controllers and storage hardware or their drivers have changed or have any problems, or if they're different in any way, and they're not. They all seem up to date and functional. These Dells have Intel 82865G Chipsets and Intel 82801EB USB Controllers. This is a nasty and annoying problem. Someone out there must have experienced this.Michael Skladd
