Slow opening secondary drives
Running Windows 7 Professional with Core2Duo 3.0ghz and 4 gigs DDR2 ram. Have 2 extra sata hard drives attached to store data. These are internal drives and not usb drives. When going to Computer to open either the D drive or E drive there is a delay opening with a green bar running across the address bar. Once that green bar goes all the way across all the folders and files open fine. Just wondering if anyone knew what is causing the delay. This never happened when I was running XP on the same computer. Thanks

Hi, I would like to suggest you update the BIOS and the motherboard drivers to check if it is improved. You may also test the issue in Safe Mode and Clean Boot. What are the results in both modes? Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT

Then, does the issue reoccur when the computer is running in Safe Mode and Clean Boot? Regards,Arthur Li - MSFT

I have the same issue. I did not have the issue with the same drives in Vista. It is like Windows 7 is putting the 2nd & 3rd drives to sleep even though I have all of that turned off. My system has the most current BIOS available. When I try to access the 2nd or 3rd HDD's there can de a delay up to about 40 seconds before it will access them. I do not have any external USB HDD's connected because if I have them connected via USB it can take my system 20 minutes to boot if at all. Dell says it is not a problem and not a supported function. LOL.... My system is below: XPS 730x i7 920 6GB Primary HDD 1TB Hitachi partitioned at about 450GB each. The 2nd & 3rd HDD are WD Green 1TB and are formated NTFS with a single partition. Windows 7 Pro x64

Arthur_Li, Now this is a crock of something smelly. The original poster did not say the problem was fixed and YOU go and mark it as solved by yourself. I posted in this thread several days ago that I am having the same issue but you never commented. I really think that you need to un mark it as the answer since it was not. Thry reading the posts in the thread instead of giving yourself brownie points......

James - The problem you're describing sounds a LOT like Windows 7 isn't indexing those drives. The solution would be to add the drives to the Indexing matrix. Simply search the drive for a file or file type by clicking on the root of the drive (D: - as a for instance) and typing something in the search box in the upper right search box. As with IE 6 and later, you will likely see a yellow bar appear that says the drive isn't indexed and searches could take a while and that you can click on the yellow bar to add it to the index. Do that - and a dialog box will pop up requesting confirmation. Tell it to do the index thing and the drive should become available much faster.

Dcgtls - See my answer to James. For what it's worth, I've got 5 drives installed on my system and the solution is to make sure the drives are added to the index. And BTW... You'll have to excuse the mods for marking posts as being answered. They have a directive to keep the number of unanswered posts to a minimum. It happens. If James logs back in, he can unmark Arthur's post and pick another one if he so chooses.

Just wanted to let you know that indexing did not solve the problem. This is my home computer but I'm having the same problem with my work computer. Running Windows 7 Professional 64bit at home and Windows 7 Enterprise 32bit at work. At work, it happens when accessing network drives or shared folders and the network. I have tried mapping drives but that doesn't help. I usually access the shares using UNC patch from run command. When accessing anything that is not on the C drive at home or at work, I have to wait for the green bar to run across the address bar before any folders or files can be opened. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to this post, but I thought I would be alerted when someone responds but that's not happening. Thanks.....
