Slow Windows 7 backup - staging file location?
I am 65 hours into a backup on a 600gig drive :( and only at 91%. It seems to me that most of the time is spent writing to the staging file on my "C" drive. It isan Intel SSD and I would like to move the backup staging file to a ramdisk. Is there a registry key that defines the location of the backup staging file? I am running Windows 7 Ulitmate 64 bit with 8gig of memory, two 80gig Intel SSDs in raid 0 for my system disk. The"drive" I'm tryinig to back up is twoHitachi 1tb drives in raid 0.

Hi Steve,This slowness is not because of the staging. We have found an issue with backup due to which if the data you are backing up is > 250 GB, the time taken to backup slows down considerably. If the data size that you are backing up falls in this range, then this slowness is expected. We are trying to address this issue in the best possible way.Pl. check this post for any updates on this issue:http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsbackup/thread/3e08fc65-52f5-48ca-ae13-321cdfc44fbdThanks,Sriram [MSFT]

I don't think you have need to move the temp folder to the memory, since the SSD drives' spped is rather faster, or your SSD drives works abnormally in your comptuer, it's better to check if the dirve score in the Windows Experience Index. As you are trying to make a bacup on an external 600 Gb drive, please let us know how do you connect the drive, through the USB port, or 1394. It may be a cause.Since the file you are trying to backup istoo big,it may cause the delay either.Sincerely! John
