Slow Network Browsing in Vista
I have a fresh install of Vista SP1 on a computer that dual-boots XP Professional for testing purposes. On Vista, browsing the domain DFS root is very slow (in both explorer and the command prompt). At first I thought maybe it was a problem with DNS, however both DNS servers seem to be fully functional and no other workstations have any problems - all network browsing is very fast. All of the computers are part of a domain including the new Vista installation. The DFS root is hosted on each of the two DCs. Upon further investigation, I realized that browsing any of the shares on the two servers that host the DFS roots is very slow from the Vista installation. Using Vista to browse other file servers is very fast, however when browsing through the DFS namespace, access tothose same shares is very slow. I've tried searching for solutions but couldn't find one that worked. Perhaps something is misconfigured, or maybe this could just be the result of some other problem that has gone unnoticed?

Hello, Please let me know which platform the DFS is based on. If youre using Windows Server 2003, please confirm its fully updated. Based on experience, as Windows Vista was released later than Windows 2003, some later updates for Windows Server 2003 will help to mitigate conflictions between the two systems. Cheers, Lionel

It looks like you were right - the two servers hosting the DFS root were lacking some updates (due to a WSUS problem that's now resolved). I installed them and now everything works great! Thanks for your help!
