Slow Login times - NETLOGON error - NIC takes a long time to authenticate
I have multiple Windows 7 machines in my environment that are experience slow logon times. These are mostly seen after logging in, and the Welcome screen comes up, the circle spins and takes anywhere from 3-5 minutes , to sometimes 20-30 minutes. Researching this issue, I've discovered many random "fixes". - background is a solid color, so changing to picture works - changing registry settings for timeout on servers - network card driver issues My specs are as follows for all machines: - Dell 755,760, or 780 models - Win 7 32bit (images deployed from SCCM) - 2003 AD environment The NIC's on these are Intel 82567LM-3's, and Intel has a few multi-page threads on driver issues. I've gone through all of them to no avail. I've also updated the bios to the most recent version. What I am discovering however, is something that I truly feel is the issue. UPDATE: I've removed the question about the services as this is not the issue (I was reading the event viewer incorrectly). What I DO see however, is that the network card takes 30 seconds or more to authenticate to the domain. When it does it after 30 seconds, I get my desktop, however, sometimes it doesn't authenticate in 30 seconds, and sometimes hangs on the Welcome screen indefinitely. I feel however, if I can resolve the NETLOGON error I'm getting, the issue will ultimately be resolved.

Hi ALaRose, A very common configuration error that most people would do that will cause this issue is - Misconfigured DHCP or DNS. Please make sure that all of your Windows 7 clients' DNS is configured to point to your Domain Controller, and ensure that your Domain Controller has DNS configured on it (preferably Active Directory Integrated DNS). Ping back if you need more information. Jabez, Upon further review, I misinterpreted the event logs, so I've removed the "stopped events" idea from the list. As I said before however, in response to your suggestion, both of these are already enabled and configured as you suggested. I've also disabled the Intel 82567LM-3 NIC and put a DYNEX Gigabit card in one of the available PCI slots, and restarted with it. I got the same NETLOGON errors however. Another test, was that I rebuilt a machine with Windows 7 from an installation disc (not one of our images), and tested rebooting with the machine NOT on our domain. I do not get the errors, and the machine boots up immediately. It appears this is something related to it talking to our domain controller, but not sure what. No XP machines have issues, however, the architecture is different, so not sure if that tells me anything.

What ended up being my solution was the Dell Open Manage Client Instrumentation (Dell OMCI). Using the following link : http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140247-trace-windows-7-bootshutdownhibernatestandbyresume-issues/ I was able to run a trace on my boot sequence. Once I got the report, I noticed where a service was taking a long time to start, which was causing the rest of my startup to be slow. Looking up that service, I noticed it was the service for Dell OMCI. I removed the program, and my boot times have deminished dramatically! I'd recommend that link and the software within it to test boot times, logons, and shutdowns. It really gives you a good picture of what's going on.
