Slow Computer and Number of Process on Task Manager
My father's computer is running very slow on start up and, when trying to shut some programmes down it either freezes or just takes its time. When it freezes I use task manager to close the programme, which usually works. Thismorning when I had to use task manager i noticed that my father has 53 processes running all at the same time.Could this be slowing the computer down and if so, what can I do about it to fix this? 1 person needs an answerI do too

There are many variables in the "my computer is slow" equation and currently we know nothing about your afflcted system. Please provide the requested information, run the indicated scans to help be reasonably sure the system is not infected with malicious software, then we can work on what is left. When you finish this part, we will have enough information to begin investigating and make well informed decisions instead of just trying things that might work and guessing. When the system does not shut down and you use the Task Manger to close the programme, what programme are you closing? Please provide additional information about your system:What is your system make and model? What is your XP Version and Service Pack?Describe your current antivirus and anti malware situation: McAfee, Symantec, Norton, Spybot, AVG, Avira!, MSE, Panda, Trend Micro, CA, Defender, ZoneAlarm, PC Tools, Comodo, etc.Does the afflicted system have a working CD/DVD drive?Do you have a genuine bootable XP installation CD (this is not the same as any Recovery CDs that came with your system)? Please provide additional information about your system:Click Start, Run and in the box enter:msinfo32Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here. There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information. This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork. Perform some scans for malicious software, then fix any remaining issues:Download, install, update and do a full scan with these free malware detection programs:Malwarebytes (MBAM): http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS): http://www.superantispyware.com/They can be uninstalled later if desired. When the scans run clean, then troubleshoot any remaining issues. Do, or do not. There is no try.I need YOUR votes and points for helpful replies and Propose as Answers. I am saving up for a pony!

Joselbarra, sorry, I forgot to say we are using AVG anti-virus and Spyware Doctor. When I am using Task Manager to close programmes it is usually internet based programmes. But occasionally it is also some software programmes. We do have a CD/DVD drive which is also a re-writer plus my father is using two external drives. When I have run a system scan with the anti-virus it is running clean. We also have CCleaner. And finally we also have a bootable XP installation CD. Thanks AgainAaron Field

The computer can have a minimum Ram of 128 mb and a maximum of 1,024 mb. Your father's computer has 256 mb. It could be that the computer is making too much use of the pagefile. Accessing the pagefile is slower than using RAMTry Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the PerformanceTab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
