Sleep Related Bugs/ Explorer Crash/ IE Wierdness
Hi, I have been using the windows beta for the last 3 months and have encountered some of the following bugs repeatedly: Whenever I activate the sleep mode, the computer doesnt respond or come to life. Repeated pressing of the power button doesnt seem to work neither does ctrl+alt+del. So much so that i have had to deactivate 'sleep' for all practical purposes and am now afraid to use it. The only way my computer would start working again is that i turn it on and off (without any activity on the monitor) then pull out themonitor cable and plug it back in, and pray. The windows explorer crashes at random instances. It does not depend on me opening a file, or doing anything with any file. It would crash randomly and then come back again after a few minutes. SometimesI have had to run explorer as a task to bring it back. The internet explorer behaves wierdly at many times, with the tabs not working right, the aero peek not displaying previews correctly and specially when trying to download a file IE seems to be on the verge of crashing. After which it crashes. I have downloaded the RC1 and will be installing it in the hope the above problems have been discontinued. But a few of my friends who have installed RC1 are still facing the Sleep issue. Can you help me?

I'm running the RC x64:My system has frozen a few times on the way down to sleep. This did not happen with the beta, started with the RC.If it happens again I'm going to change out the Nvidia GEForce drivers - when weirdness happens unfortunately the first place I always look is the Nvidia drivers... I'm currently using the latest Nvidia drivers 185.85, and I have two Nvidia 8800GT cards driving 3 monitors./jad

Sleep issues are extremely common. They are due to hardware that does not get initialized properly when resuming, and drivers do not work correctly on the non-initialized hardware. I never use sleep, and view it as a solution looking for a problem. I use hibernation on my laptops, but never sleep. Win 7 defaults to sleep after 30 minutes or so, and I had my desktop go to sleep, and of course I could not wake it up. I had to power down to get it to come back. For your other problems - IE crashing, etc. - I would suspect bad RAM or some other hardware problem. Software just does not crash for no reason.

A power efficiency diagnostics report may help pinpoint the source of the problem. You may wish to check out your computer logs too for clues. See this handy article which describes the new features of W7 power diagnostics. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/4569-power-efficiency-diagnostics-report.htmlAs for random crashes, they are certainly generally indicative of a hardware or driver issue. Again the system logs may help. I would start by checking memory and graphics. Try the "Windows memory diagnostics" in administrative tools. As ever, check out and install the latest drivers for your chipset and devices. Disconnect any unnecessary devices for a while and see what changes, and them add them as you go.Hope that helps. www.stevenmunden.info/candoforyou

Thanks for the info.As usual, it seems that changing the Nvidia drivers from the latest version 185.85 to my ol' reliable 169.25 has solved the problem. I'll report it to Nvidia if I can... If the problem recurs I'll update this msg.Whenever sleep (or other problems) happen, unfortunately the first thing I look at is the Nvidia video drivers.Best/jim

Hey everyone, Thanks a lot for your updates. Firstly, the IE and explorer crashes have stopped after I installed the RC1. The windows explorer does behave wirdly at times though, and its CPU usage goes up to 80-90 / 100. Then I have to kill and restart the process to get it running. I believe this specially happens when I try to open a folder containing videos and the address bar at top fills up with green (Notifying indexing?). It happens everytime for all folders that I work on.I dont think hardware bugs would cause IE/explorer crash. In such an instance (Faulty RAM et al) the OS itself would reboot with a BSOD, as was the case earlier with me. However taking out logs would not be a bad idea at any point of time.As for the sleep related issues, I have stopped using it altogether. Disabled it and just let the computer remain on.Lastly, I love RC1. Ibelieve it ISmore stable as compared to thebeta version, and kicks all apple/mac ____ in terms of user friendliness/awesomeness.Thanks for your inputs guys!Saurabh
