Sites with login prompts add domain prefix
Hi, Not sure if this is the correct section, but we have a user on a Windows 7 Pro x86 machine that is unable to access a particular website. When browsing to the URL, a Windows Security popup box asks for login credentials straight away, but in IE9 the box states our domain name, and the site's login details aren't accepted. Although we are given the option to user another account, this also seems to keep our domain prefix. In other browsers (Safari, Firefox and Chrome) the login box appears without any indication of domain, but the login still fails. The site works fine on a standalone Windows 7 machine, and also XP machines added to the same domain. Any ideas? Thanks in advance. ** EDIT - machine is joined to a 2003 domain **

Better forum is here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/iecs/threads Better specification of "unable to access a particular website" is needed. What is the target web site and what is the protocol (HTTP or HTTPS). Also the name resolution system description is needed. Good staring point is cache cleanup (ipconfig /flushdns) Rgds Milos

apologies - site is http://www.ocsia-nfa-elearning.org/ I didn't post it in an IE forum as we can't access the site in other browsers - I assumed there would be some kind of setting for Windows 7 machines joined to a Server 2003 domain that would be causing this. ipconfig /flushdns made no difference. What do you mean by 'name resolution system description'? Thanks

Hi, I try to visit the website using a no domain joined machine, it requires username and password. And, the reason that you do not need to add prefixes is a no domain joined machine uses its local machine name as the default domain name. However, a domain joined machine uses the domain name as the default domain name. Therefore, you need to modify or add the prefixes. Add .\ is to use the local domain, it is same as when this machine does not join a domain. Therefore, please double check the username and password. Also, you can check that again in a no domain joined machine. If issue persists, due to we have no permission to access the website, you may need to contact the website owner for help. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

Hi, Based on the information, it seems that the website requires a local account. Therefore, please login the computer use a local account or use .\username format and see how it works. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support

using .\username changes the domain name in the security box to my computer name. Is that normal behaviour? Site doesn't work when logged onto my Win7 machine using domain account then using .\username for the site. Site doesn't work when logged onto my Win7 machine as local user then using .\username for the site. The site does work externally, both on a standalone Win7 laptop and on a smartphone, using just "username" and no prefixes. Annoyingly the user doesn't have any support details for the site, and when I can log into the site on non-Win7 domain machines there are no 'support' or 'contact us' links. Thanks
