Simple Question (hopefully): Sharing files on NAS drive from multiple PCs running Win7 Home Premium / Professional - can I do this easily?
I have a number of PCs that I have successfully connected to an external NAS drive. However, I would like to set up read/write privileges on a per folder/per file basis between these different users. In other words, I would like to accomplish the following scenarios: SCENARIO 1: Given: - User1 on PC1 and User2 on PC2: - User1 has Windows7 Home Premium and User2 has Windows7 Home premium and are in the same workgroup: - I would like to have User1 connect to the NAS drive and create a folder FOO. - User1 would like to make FOO read/write for himself and grant read only access to FOO to User2. Can I do this without needing to upgrade both machines to Windows7 professional? If so, how do I do that? SCENARIO 2: Given: - User1 on PC1 and User2 on PC2: - User1 has Windows7 Home Premium and User2 has Windows7 Home premium and are in the same workgroup: - I would like to have User1 connect to the NAS drive and create a folder BAR. - Both User1 and User2 have read/write privileges to BAR, but User1 wants to be able to have a file (samplefile.txt) in that folder that only he can edit. Can I do this without needing to upgrade both machines to Windows7 professional? If so, how do I do that? I know this a FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

There are NAS devices, which you can use like servers and set all ACLs like you want. But there are many simpler NAS devices without any possibilty to set individual ACLs. On some NAS devices you set ACLs with native Windows tools - on some you can only do this in a special console/application. Wolfgang

Hi, Your wish is to make the NAS as a Server which can distinguish different user accounts. I think these features are related to the NAS system. (Some NAS has Account Management.) If your NAS is a simple one, I think you may add a computer to manager the user accounts to access the NAS.
