Sideloading for LOB App

Gone are the days that I can just develop an App in VB or C and run it on a PC without jumping through more hoops than a circus dog. : (

I have been reading for days about trying to get an app on a Windows 8.1 Pro Tablet.   The app is not finished yet but it is for a business and internal employees only.  Employees need to key enter information whether online or not.  When online they can sync the app with a central core server.  The direction I was heading in was sideloading apps but as I was following instructions for loading the key, I got confused about some of the instructions.  I posted a question in another Microsoft Forum and they sent me here.  Found some articles on sideloading here and now I am more confused than ever.

1) Does the tablet have to be on a domain?  My instructions from two sources say yes but posts here make me think no
2) If yes, what happens if tablet is offline and cannot connect to the domain? Instructions led me to believe app will no longer work.  I really need this app to work on and offline.
3) Posts here lead me to believe I can deploy this app without using the store but other posts say I can use store but restrict access to credentials. I was planning on building one tablet and ghosting to all the new tablets for deployment. Is any one method better than another?
4) Finally, has anyone posted something in less than 50 interlinked articles and in plain language how to do something like this step by step?

Could really use a sideload expert to help connect the dots. Anyone got a moment to field these questions?
