Shutdown
I have read that Windows 8.1 was designed so that it is unnecessary to shutdown.  Is this correct?

Can you please explain a bit ?

As per my understanding, MS has never specific any up-time / maximum running time for any client or server OS. Practically, you can run Win 8 or 7 (etc) for as long as you want to.
