Should be simple but its not... Vista-XP Networking Fustrations
I have asked about this problem in the Windows Community Discussions in Network & Sharing, but no one there was able to help me... so I will repost my networking fustrations here: I know its alot of *** to read but any help is greatly, IMMENSELY appriciated.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Its been about three months since I've given up trying to network my Vista machine with my XP machine, but I thought I would try it again. Some people were helping me, and I thank them, sorry for not updating my post, but there was nothing to update. Anyway here are my symptoms again: *Vista (Ultimate) machine cannot see XP (Home SP2) machine. *XP machine can see and access the Vista machine. *Xp machine shows up in the Vista Network Map, but not the Network Folder. *Both machines can ping each other. *I can access the XP machine via IP address, I can access the shared folder but not a shared printer. *IPConfig for Vista shows that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is disabled even though it is enabled in the Network Adaptor Properties dialog. (NetBIOS over TCP/IP always enabled, the middle radio button) Other information: *Everything worked as it should once apon a time, then it all went to ***. It could have been an update, tweaking software, or antivirus setting, but I notcie too late to do anything about it. *I know it can't be that I don't have the same User/Password on both machines (I tried it anyway but it still didn't work), because it worked awhile back without having the same accounts on both machines. *I had Bitdefender 2008 on the Vista machine, the Firewall log had entries that the ports 138 and 139 were being refused, despite having the XP machine being on the trusted list (by its IP address). So I uninstalled the Antivirus, but the problem persists. *The XP machine has Zone Alarm Internet Security. *I have an Archos Media Player. It can act as a file server and can connect to a network like a regular computer. It can see the XP machine and the XP machine can see it. The Vista machine cannnot see it , and the Archos Media Player cannot see the Vista machine. The Vista machine and Archos Media Player can see each other when networking worked. I believe the OS is Linux based. *I have a Linksys WRT350N router. I can only conclude something is wrong with the Vista machine only, as all other devices are working like they should. I have the following settings in the Network and Sharing window in Vista: *Network: Private *Network Discovery: On *File Sharing: On *Public Folder Sharing: On (Read Only) *Password Protected Sharing: Off *Media Sharing: On I will post my IPConfig for my Vista machine in a reply. Thanks for reading this far at least, any help is appreciated. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------In additon, my Vista machine is hooked up to the Linksys Router directly, while the XP machine is connected wirelessly.I've also tried resetting the Winsock and TCP/IP stacks via netsh. Thanks in advance, even if you just read this far

Hi, Before we go further, I would like to confirm the following: 1. Are the machines located in the same workgroup? 2. Please run the following commands on the Windows Vista machine and let me know the result:1) net view /domain:WorkgruopName2) net view \\ComputerNameoftheXPMachine 3. Please post the Windows IP Configuration (ipconfig /all) of the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines here. In addition, here is an article about file sharing in Windows Vista for your reference: File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

Hi, Based on the current situation, I suggest enabling Netmon on both machines to capture the network packets for further research: 1) Download NetMon3.1 from the following website and install it on the Windows Vista and Windows XP machines:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=18b1d59d-f4d8-4213-8d17-2f6dde7d7aac&DisplayLang=en2) Log onto the machines, right-click the Netmon icon and select Run as Administrator to launch NetMon3.1.3) In the Microsoft Network Monitor 3.1 window, click Create a new capture tab 4) In the new tab, select all the Network Adapters in the Select Networks window.5) After that, press F10 to start NetMon.Note: Please start NetMon on both machines. 6) On the Windows Vista machine, click Start, click Network to reproduce the issue. 7) After the network discovery complete, go back to the NetMon window and press F11 to stop the NetMon. 8) Press Ctrl+S to save the Netmon file and upload them to the following space: https://sftasia.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=7ab14d36-4aa4-4085-b096-a160bc912362 Password: D!X1@SSB1vIjB^a] In addition, please understand that to analyze/troubleshoot this kind of issue may be time consuming. If it is urgent, Id like to recommend that you contact Microsoft Customer Support Service for instant assistance. To obtain the phone numbers for specific technology request please take a look at the website listed below:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;PHONENUMBERS

OK I did what you asked. The cap file for my Vista Computer is called Vista.cap, and my XP Computer is called XP.cap. Vista IP Address:192.168.1.101 XPIP Address:192.168.1.102 Futhermore, here are some other symptoms I am experiencing for the Vista Computer: *When using ipconfig /all, the Netbios over tcp/ipoption for my network adapter is displayed as 'disabled' even thoughI have it enabled in the properties dialog box. (To try and remedy this , I tried resetting the WMI repository using winmgmt in safe mode, but it did not help) *In the properties dialog box for my Network adapter, I try and choose 'Windows Locator' as the RPCService under the properties dialog box for 'Clients for Microsoft Networks', but it resets itself to a blank choice. *Every once and while, I will get a message indicating a IP Address Conflict, even though both computers are set to static IP addresses, and I can also use the internet without problem. Anyway, I hope you can find something in those cap files, Thanks for your help Joson Zhou - MSFT

HOLY ***you guys, After almost a year (I know this thread was started sometime in June, but I had been looking all over long before) I have FINALLY found the answer to my problems. I was about to give up and reimage my damn Vista Ultimate machine when I hadbought a new laptop with Vista Home Premium and decided to start lookinginto this problem once again. Mymy laptop could see everybody, my XP Machine,my Archos Media Device, and even my VistaUltimate machine. But still my VistaUltimate machine could not see anything, it saw my laptop for a few days and then nothing. I notice my NetBIOS was disabled and no matter what I did, I could not get the *** to reenable, no netsh reset or winsock reset , nothing would help, and I KNEW this was to blame because I could access any computer on my networkvia ip address but not computer name, hence a browser naming issue. Here is what I did to make it work: - Enter the registry - HKEYLocalMachines/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/NetBt/Parameters-Double Click"transportbindname"- enter the value \Device\ (use the backslashes) hit ok.- reboot That's it. Months and months of fustrations for a solution that took less than 30 seconds to impliment. I hope this helps someone with this issue or if someone cannot enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP for some reason. Thanks again for all those who tried to help.
