Sharing libraries in Homegroup does not actually share them
Hi, After two fresh installations of Windows 7 Professional machines that are connected over a wired LAN, we set up a Homegroup. After a day of fighting getting the computers to see each other, we managed to get both computers on the Homegroup and identifying each other. We shared our pictures, music, and videos on each. Basic problem, each computer can see the libraries of the other, but not the contents (My Music shows up on the remote computer, but clicking on it does nothing). Here's some information I found through troubleshooting: All of these libraries were populated from old installations of Windows XP, but all of their contents were taken ownership of as soon as the transfer was complete, and any leftover security tokens were removed. That is to say, both ownership and security now look like they should on all objects. They are owned by the default account (there's only one active on each machine, and it's an Administrator), and permissions exist for SYSTEM, [The User], Administrators, HomeUsers, and WMPNetworkSvc. All groups have full access except HomeUsers (Read/Read-Execute) and WMPNetworkSvc (Read). If I right-click on any library and choose properties, the Shared checkbox is checked and disabled. If I navigate to the actual folder (i.e. Users\Me\My Videos) and click on it, it is shown in the Explorer status bar as Shared. I run fsmgmt.msc to see all my file shares. Sure enough, none of the libraries are listed. Big clue here, all of the libraries are checked as shared, they are tagged in the Explorer status bar as shared, but do not show up as shares in the Shared Folders msc. Now I right-click on the actual folder (Users\Me\My Videos) and choose properties/sharing. The top box (Network File and Folder Sharing) shows the folder as shared. I choose "Advanced Sharing" from that page: "Share this folder" is *NOT* checked. If I check "Share this folder", the share shows up in the msc, in the Homegroup, and on the remote computer. But on the remote computer, it shows up as two shares, both the library and the actual folder. Yes it works, but not optimal. If I try to share any folders within any library by the usual "Share with Homegroup (read)" method, the share will not work. So it's not just trying to share entire libraries, but anything within a library that causes this problem. As a final note, if I choose HomeGroup sharing OUTSIDE a library, such as a folder off of the root, and do the normal right-click, "Share With..., HomeGroup (read)", it works as expected--shows up in my shares and on the remote computer instantly. It's something about the libraries that is blocking the actual share from taking place. So the crux of my question is this--what could be causing the library to say that it's shared, Explorer thinks it's shared, and even the first page of its properties page says it's shared, but it actually isn't? Seems that something is blocking the actual share from happening. Ideas? Thanks for any input.
