Sharing internet from Windows 7 PC to PS3 using ICS
The goal: Allow the PS3 to access internet as if it were connected directly to the router via ethernet, through ICS from my Windows 7 PC. The issue: When setting up my 2 Lan settings on my PC, I get my PS3 online and then the computers' internet slows or stops, and the PS3's internet will be a crawl or not work at all. The setup: I have 2 LAN ports on my Windows 7 PC. Port 1 is connected to the router and supplies the PC with internet. Port 1 Config: IP Address: 192.168.2.113 (Static IP for my computer) Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1 (My router, without this the connection shows up as "Unknown Network") Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.2.1 (My router) Port 1 is also sharing its connection with other computers connected to the PC. Something odd though is that there is no drop down box to choose a specific connection to share with, but no more than 2 weeks ago, it had one and it was chosen as Port 2. And then it disappeared randomly. The 2nd LAN port, Port 2, Connects to the PS3 from the PC. Port 2 Config: IP Address: 192.168.137.1 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: none Preferred DNS Server: none According to the internet, this setup should work with the PS3 set to detect the configuration automatically. However this is not the case. When the PS3 attempts to connect automatically, it hangs and returns an error saying it can't obtain an IP address. So I set it up to have a static IP. PS3 Config: IP Address: 192.168.137.150 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 192.168.2.1 Preferred DNS Server: 192.168.2.1 The internet also said I should have the Gateway and DNS set to my router IP for this to work. And to some extent it works. The PS3 will connect to the internet. However as I mentioned above, the connection is slow on the PS3 and virtually kills the connection on my PC. I have tried every combination of numbers for every configuration I could and cannot come up with a solution. Does anyone have any experience and or ideas? I want the PS3 to be online with full 100mb connection while the PC is also online at full capacity, and I want the PS3 on the same network as the PC. The most I can figure out to get rid of unidentified network is to have the Default Gateway on Port 2 set to Port 1's IP, and the PS3 set to that as well. This causes Port 2 to appear to have 2 connections, one "unidentified" and one listed as "Network 2" but the PS3 cannot connect to the internet like this and my PC connection also fails. I can provide more information if needed.

It depends. Actually, in most cases, we use HUB/Switch device for ICS. Do you have such device? I think we may have a test with the router. To make ICS works, we at least need to: 1. Connect two computers to the LAN ports of the router. 2. Disable DHCP on the router. 3. Ensure Broadcast is not disabled. 4. Configure the router to use 192.168.0.X subnet. 5. Ensure the router itself does not use 192.168.0.1 (because we must reserve it for the ICS host computer). For example, you may configure the router to use 192.168.0.254. Then, follow the previous documents to setup ICS in your network. However, I am not sure what router you are using and how it functions. I just provide the above steps for your reference. Most of the steps are related to changing the router’s configuration via its web page. Therefore, I highly recommend that you call the manufacturer for further confirmation and assistance, if necessary. Hello, Thank you for the response. However I don't think you get what I was explaining. I don't have 2 computers to connect to the Router, just one. And I want to connect my PS3 to the PC because my PC can get internet through the ethernet walljack in the room it's in, but that's only 1 plug therefore I can't hookup the PS3 right to the router. My router is an SMCWBR14S-N4. My router is in a different area of the house and can't be relocated. Hence why I want to have my PC receive internet from the router directly, and pass it through to the PS3 when the PS3 is on. I am trying to use ICS because when I create a bridge, the setup will work to provide internet to my PC and my PS3 at once, without any issues or errors. But as soon as I turn my PS3 off, the computer stops receiving an internet connection too. It's very odd but I can't figure out how to make that work, so I'm going with ICS. Maybe a bridge is a better solution and I didn't set it up right. Any advice on that?

A switch connected to the wall outlet would be the easiest method. The each device would connect to the switch and the router would assign each it's own address. No need for ICS or any other configurations. The switch will provide additional ethernet ports to the router. $20 at tigerdirect -TPLInk You need a crossover cable to accomplish what you are trying to do. You will find the gaming throughput will be slowed. Use the switch.

I understand, But I don't want to use a switch in this case. I want it to be done with what I have. Don't ask why, it's just how it is. And I have used a crossover cable and a Patch cable, both provide the same issues. The reason they perform the same is because modern network ports in computers can automatically switch. And all my equipment is modern. Therefore it actually doesn't matter what cable I use, as long as it's compliant. But for the sake of argument, I am using a crossover cable as I should be.

well then, since you believe that is the situation, just click Start=>select Help and Support and type ics in the search box. The results will assist you in creating the connection.

Like I said, following what the setup tells me, I get a less than working connection. I don't know why.

Hi, Just to understand you correctly, you have 2 NIC on your PC. Lan 1 connected to the router with IP: 192.168.2.113 the second NIC (Lan 2) you connect it to your PS3 and you want to share internet from Lan 1 to Lan 2. Please follow the steps below: 1. Go to Network Connection and make ensure that on Lan 1 Properties->Sharing tab the ICS is off. 2. Unplug your Lan 2 and make sure you set DNS and IP address dynamically under the Properties->TCP/IP. (This will be automatically replaced once you turn on your ICS) 3. Lan 1 Properties->Sharing tab and select Allow other network users to connect through this computers Internet connection. If you are presented with the option which network adapter to share with, select Lan 2. This only happens if you have more than 2 NIC to shere the internet connection with. 4. Plug in you Lan 2 cable, and you should be receiving an IP Address. Hope this helps. Cheers, Ramin
