Sharing an Old Scanner
The last driver for my HP 5470c scanner was created in 2001. I was able to run it on 32 bit Vista without problem, but no way on 64 bit Windows 7 on my desktop. So I tried installing it on my 32 bit Windows 7 laptop. The install completed without errors (XP compatibility mode) and I was able to scan a document so it looks like it works. I would like to share it across the network to my 64 bit desktop. I've set up a Homegroup. I can't see an option to share it and I don't see it on my desktop. I have a printer connected to my desktop that I can see on my laptop. I did nothing to share it. Is the sharing process automatic? I could scan to a file in a shared folder and open it in PS, but I would like to save a few steps. Thanks for any help, Curt

Hi,In general, when a user shares their printer in the HomeGroup Control Panel, all USB-connected printers that are installed on that local PC are automatically shared. If the printer has drivers certified by WHQL (Windows Hardware Quality Lab), the printer will be silently installed on all HomeGroup PCs. Otherwise, if the printer does not have drivers that have been certified, the printer will display a notification, and also show UI in the HomeGroup control panel, asking the user to elevate to install the printer driver. This notification will only show once in the tray and always show in the control panel until the user has acted on it. Based on my research on HP and WHQL, HP 5470c scanner doesn't have Windows 7 compatible driver, you may need to manually share the scanner. BTW, I recommend you to launch Windows Fax and Scan to manually add the scanner and see if it works. For references:Windows 7 HomeGroupBest RegardsDale

The scanner does scan correctly on the Windows 7 32 bit PC. When I read the "manually share the scanner" page, it said to install the driver on the PC from which you wish to scan. Since this is a Windows 7 64 bit PC, it isn't possible. HP didn't even make Vista drivers for the scanner let alone 64 bit. I rarely do scans so I'll just scan to a file and share that. Thanks for the response, Curt
